The Spike Video Game Awards were held over the weekend, inviting celebs from inside (and outside) of the gaming industry for a bit of a shindig at LA's convention center. In all the hubbub of the game announcements, we didn't mention the actual awards themselves...
To save you skipping to the end, the game appointed as Game of the Year (no small honour, to be sure) was...
Red Dead Redemption! We gave it our first (and only, so far) ever 10/10 so if you're looking for a surprised expression on the face of anyone at NZGamer.com, you'll be disappointed.
For the grand prize, RDR was up against Call of Duty: Black Ops (8.6), God of War III (9.2), Halo: Reach (8.9) and Mass Effect 2 (9.2).
Other notable awards for the night included:
- Halo: Reach (8.9) edging out StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (9.8) for best multiplayer (wat)
- Portal 2 winning most anticipated game, over heavyweights like Gears of War III, Bioshock Infinite and Batman: Arkham City. Not bad for a sequel to what was initially a very low-profile game!

RDR as game of the year...still haven't played it. HAHA! But from what I've heard, I'm not sure what else would be up there? Not CODBLOPS...maybe SCII? Was that good story, gameplay, graphics, DLC and multiplayer-wise? As these would be the things that would make up a GOTY would they not?

My personal favourite game of the year is Heavy Rain. It is the most original and unique game I've played all year.

Having played and completed (single player mostly) all the GOTY nominees I am in complete and utter agreement with the winner. RDR is in a class of it's own !!!
Finally The VGA's actually made a good decision and gave a good game goty
GOTY is always diffucult to decide when you have so many great releases, but personally, and I know a lot wont agree with me, God of War 3. Simply because I've always been a huge fan of the GOW series and out of all the games I played this one got me the most immersed into it. Even bothered to finish it 6 times, so yeah, GOTY for me. Can't argue that RDR is incredible though.
