Survey Reveals Nintendo 3DS most Desirable

A recent survey conducted by GameInformer of its readers revealed that the Nintendo 3DS is the most desirable technological product. Despite the hype and attention that is surrounding products like Microsoft’s Kinect and Sony PS3’s Move, it seems that they were not able to capture the imagination of the gaming audience as well as Nintendo’s portable gaming device.

With the 3DS capturing the imagination of almost 40% of its readers, questions will raised whether the market is big enough for three motion sensing devices and whether the buzz around such devices is just hype drummed up by Sony and Microsoft. However the same survey did reveal that just over 25% of those questioned intend to buy either Kinect or Move. This is a vast improvement, when earlier this year OTX conducted a survey which showed that less than 10% would consider getting Kinect or Move.

The Nintendo 3DS will be the latest device of the Nintendo DS series. The DS main selling point will be its 3D capability. What sets it apart from other 3D capable products is the use autostereoscopy. This allows the Nintendo 3DS to provide the 3D effects without the use of a 3rd party device such as specialised 3D glasses. An announcement will be made by Nintendo on the exact official release date, later this month on the 29th September.

With an exciting few months ahead for product releases, what are you most anticipating?

Not surprising. I think Sony and Microsoft really missed the boat. Microsoft especially; if you wanted a Wii-type experience, you would have already bought a Wii. It doesn't matter that they are more technically advanced (and it never has in this industry), because the concept is already old hat.

Meanwhile, 3D without glasses is new and exciting, and that's initially what fuels each generational jump. The question isn't whether the 3DS is exciting; it's whether Nintendo will price it too high.

I think it's also about the games too, cause personally the DS has never interested me even with the 3DS coming because simply none of the games Nintendo has interest me in the slightest, although the glasses free 3D is wicked.

I think the difference in interest/desire levels is because 3DS is a completely new console. The motion controllers are just accessories that are intended to extend the respective consoles relevance and accessibility to a wider audience.

I bet most readers of GameInformer are 'core' gamers and already own either a PS3, Xbox and/or Wii. They're Not the audience that Sony and Microsoft are really trying to tap into with the motion controller. The 3DS on the other hand is attractive to a very wide audience because no one has it, or anything capable of doing what it can.

"whether the buzz around such devices is just hype drummed up by Sony and Microsoft..."

Well it certainly isn't being drummed up by us.
