N64 GoldenEye Designer Criticizes Activision

The Wii exclusive GoldenEye 007 remake has attracted criticism from one of the N64 GoldenEye designers. Specifically, what he believes is Activision's motivation behind the remake.

In an interview with the Official Nintendo Magazine (via Gamepolitics), designer Martin Hollis said he believes Activision saw money in the name and is cashing in. "I imagine it's a business decision, isn't it?" Hollis said. "'This name is valuable, let's use it.' I find it hard to picture Activision's top management being excited about the original and wanting to do it justice."

Although he has his doubts about Activision's motivation for the remake being anything but profit, Hollis believes developer Eurocom could deliver a worthy remake. "I know and like Eurocom," he said. "I think they are a good company. I'm confident they have done their very best."

The remake came up in an interview on "the making of GoldenEye 64."

GoldenEye 007 is set to launch this Spring exclusively for the Nintendo Wii.

Isn't profit the main reason way people make games, or anything else for the matter?

'This name is valuable, let's use it.'

Just like the original cashed in on the name of the movie it's based on.

Yeah its a bit rich coming from another developer. What, they're going to make a game with no commercial value because they like it?

Maybe the original team doesn't get any royalties haha.

I was watching some gameplay footage, and it's more like Call of Duty than Goldeneye. I think the comments were right on the money. But as Kicks says, isn't everything done for profit?

But yeah, I might pass on this one. I'm getting kind of sick of how Activision has this mindset that everyone wants the same type of game just sh*t into a different package. As gaming becomes increasingly homogenized, I find myself being left out in the cold. :(
