New Xbox 360 Controller Revealed

Published By: Morgan Bates   On: Wednesday 1 Sep 2010 7:00 AM

Microsoft today unveiled a new design for the Xbox 360 controller. The new design features an upgraded d-pad - possibly the most complained about aspect of the original controller.

The new d-pad allows players to twist the pad to go from the classic, to a more conventional plus design. Other changes include the new monochromatic face buttons and concave analog sticks.

The new controller will only be available with the new Play & Charge Kit and is due to launch in the US for USD$65 November 9th and elsewhere early 2011.

This announcement could be a little early given the previously announced Fable 3 controller bares the old design.

So a twisting Dpad to raise it, and change in button colour?
lol WOW! amazing piece of engineered upgrading! :P
I dont think the Dpad is that bad, not enough for me to go out and buy a new one.

I found the old d-pad awful for fighting games. Not sure I'll get this though since I've got a street fighter 4 controller

The problem with the d-pad wasn't its shape; it was the responsiveness (or lack of it). Cheap parts are cheap.

This will probably solve nothing and just makes me wonder if Microsoft's gaming department actually listens or just too the criticism as "Duh, SNES controller was good."

I was expecting him to give some fancy reason for the button colour change. I like the colours better.

Maybe one of the guys designing it has an unhealthy obsession with Limbo.

what the hell!? aren't those colours hardwired into the interface and minds of every 360 game and gamer respectively!? why the hell would they change em?? It'd almost be like Sony suddenly deciding that square, triangle, circle and X are out and diamond, star, line and hexagon are the way forward!? Very weird but at least it's optional and not the default pack-in

I wonder how much you could twist Major Nelson's face before it changed shape permanently....

I agree, makes it easier for new comers to 360 controllers to know quickly which button to push. It might look a bit flasher in all grey but really just not practical. Gonna be a big price tag too by the looks if $65 USD expect to pay at least $110 here.

On the colors thing, I guess no one here ever had a Dreamcast or a SNES. I guess the Xbox has been around long enough now that it's a standard, but for a while it was doing in my head.
