Last week we reported on Serial Killer, a 'roguelike' RPG. Today it has been found out to be an elaborate hoax. Gamepolitics (our source on the original story) reports that a post on the RPG Codex forum where the story originated led them to the Something Awful forums where Crimson King, or the YouTube user who posted the original video, said that the game is a hoax.

"The purpose was to gather statistical information for a University project. We reviewed individual YouTube accounts, as well as the forum posting history of various users who expressed interest in the game, to determine if they are also avid players of other extremely violent games," the alleged uploader said.
"We paid special attention to gamers who sent us PM's with extremely disturbing, sexually explicit content suggestions. There's a lot of you out there. We only needed the statistics of around 100 users, though we've ended up with much, much more than that due to how quickly the game has spread."
Roguelike RPG fansite Roguetemple.com offered some theories as to why Crimson King would go to so much trouble to create the hoax.
• He was doing an university project to study the reactions of people to such a controversial theme
• He was just a high level troll with flash skills and some spare time
• The project raised the expectations far too high and scared the hell out of the developer
• Personal reasons caused the developer to dismiss it, fearing it would affect his life.
• Someone hacked all of his accounts including bay12 and youtube, impersonated him and deleted everything (that person is probably seeking him physically now, to finish his cleaning rampage)
