Since its release, the PlayStation 3's piracy issues have been limited to the "sharing" of PlayStation Network titles. That may change, as Eurogamer reports that an unknown group of console hackers claim to have successfully soft-modded the PlayStation 3. The group sent out packages to mod chip resellers consisting of a USB stick with a software hack installed.
One of the recipients, Australia-based OzModChips, has posted the following video of the hack in action.
The hack, named PSJailbreak, reportedly allows any model of PS3 to back up and run games from the consoles hard drive.
Sony's all too familiar with software hacking, their PlayStation Portable has been plagued by hacks for years. If the PlayStation 3 hack is for real you can bet they will act fast to find and plug the security hole.

Should be interesting to see how this plays out. But it's been confirmed to be true.
Now the old pirating cover of: "Now i can play NTSC games!@!"
will be replaced with: "now i can back up all my games!1!"

That cover won't cut it on PlayStation 3 because the games are region free.

That's why he said it will be replaced with "now i can back up all my games."

Just a pity it works out to be rather expensive for us here in africa. I also don't want Sony to now start messing with the limited devices that do work via the USB ports which is what they'll most likely do to try and prevent piracy. Sweet and sour at the same time it seems!
Yay, now it won't be long before Sony starts banning consoles!
Next firmware update from Sony removes the 'turn console on' feature.

wonder how big those backup are, and what sony does to combat this
In the videos that have shown it working, they have all been displayed on debugged machines, which makes the whole thing suspicious. Debug machines allow people to apply unofficial code, and already has emulator capabilities (to an extent). Just makes one wonder, why they are showing functionality on a debugged unit, when showing it on a 'proper' PS3 would add validity.
Either way, I hope it isn't hacked, this kinda thing can only have a negative impact on the gaming industry (remeber OS removal?)....and this coming from a guy who can barely afford to game as it is :P

Nobody needs backup PS3 discs. You'd have to be pretty careless to scratch a Blu-Ray disc to the point where it won't play. Same goes if you manage to lose a disc.

That doesn't mean we're not allowed to though.Nobody needs backup PS3 discs. You'd have to be pretty careless to scratch a Blu-Ray disc to the point where it won't play. Same goes if you manage to lose a disc.
I'm gonna wait a month before i think abou this. Its $180 too. Not worth it if it meant i can't play online anymore and it will just get fixed with a FM update

I think that dongle kind of turns your retail PS3 into a debug PS3 so it can read the .pkg files that the hack uses...

Was always going to happen, just a matter of time. Guess more firmware updates are coming...
I wouldn't mind getting a second ps3 console to use this mod. That way I could use my main console for online use and the 2nd for backup games.

Great another reason for Game publishers to push up the price of games :( PIRACY IS THE UGLY IN OUR INDUSTRY.

Some people are so f**king stupid. Hacking is gay, get over it.
I've preordered one to have a play with. I think Sony are behind the release as it will drive PS3 sales as it did for the PS1 and PS2.

Interesting , Being able to put your library of ps3 games onto a harddrive would be cool. Not worth the lack of ability to go online that will surely follow though

Seeing as SCE make most of their money off software rather than hardware, i think saying they leaked it is reaching a bit, given this allows people to pirate their cash cow. Their hardware sales aren't exactly lacking either.I've preordered one to have a play with. I think Sony are behind the release as it will drive PS3 sales as it did for the PS1 and PS2.
It could've been anyone with a SDK, and there are hundreds of game devs with SDK's.
^Scrap that. It sounds like might not've been leaked by anyone after all and was custom made.
might get me one next year as its about $240 including the shipping from australia

Will people really pay loads of money to copy games?! knowing full well that on the next firmware update they won't be able to log onto the PSN / play online / sync trophies etc?! The worlds gone mad if it's true?! Am I missing something?! I buy games from my fave series/franchises/devs on day one but with others I just wait and pick them up from the bargain bin. The last 6 or 7 games I have bought this way cost between $10 and $30 each!? Brand NEW!?
