Blizzard to Kill Anonymity on Their Forum

Published By: Morgan Bates   On: Wednesday 7 Jul 2010 1:15 PM

Blizzard fans will soon be required to use their real names on their forum. As part of a strategy to combat flame wars and trolling, Blizzard announced that they will be implementing Real ID - users' real names will be seen, instead of traditional handles.

"The official forums have always been a great place to discuss the latest info on our games, offer ideas and suggestions, and share experiences with other players," a Blizzard rep wrote. "However, the forums have also earned a reputation as a place where flame wars, trolling, and other unpleasantness run wild. Removing the veil of anonymity typical to online dialogue will contribute to a more positive forum environment, promote constructive conversations, and connect the Blizzard community in ways they haven’t been connected before. With this change, you’ll see blue posters (i.e. Blizzard employees) posting by their real first and last names on our forums as well."

Couldn't you just use a fake real name?

It goes down like this. When making an account, you need to provide information such as your real name and address. This cannot be changed. So unless someone had the foresight to sign up with the name Cookie McWeaksauce, it's moot.

Secondly, if something happens to your account, you need to get in touch with Blizzard and you need to provide proof of identification about who you are. Gonna be hard to do if you've put your name as Cookie McWeaksauce.

Well I mean in the context of what I was saying. Not that it's much to complain about. Real name oh no! Mum might see this!

Cool, now it will be easier for those crazy WoW players (the ones who live in the game 24 hours a day) to come track you down and kill you for beating them in the game. :P

There's enough d*cks out there that don't care about their name being known for this not to work at all.
