WoW.com today posted that players have shelled out over $3 mil (USD) - and counting - for World of Warcraft's latest virtual beast: the "Celestial Steed". Boasting sales over 140,000 at 7:30 p.m. EDT.

What is interesting isn't that a virtual item is selling well, rather it's that people are willing to pay $25 USD (35 NZD) for it - it was only a few years ago that we bolted at the idea of Oblivion's Horse Armor costing 800 MS points.

Well, no wonder companies keep making DLC cost extra.
It makes money..
It makes money..
It look like absolute c##p. I find the whole WOW phenomenon quite bizarre.

The people on my realm were having parades with it, they love it so much.
There are plenty of people in this country(and around the world) who think the exact same way as you, but about gaming in general.
So don't look too far down your nose at the people shelling out for this.

in the grand scheme of things it scales quite well (compared to other DLC).
if you've being playing WOW since release (2004, lets say 2005 since it was Nov), it's now 2010, so for 5 years (60 months) you've being paying 15 USD (for arguments sake you didn't buy in bigger blocks and thus get a discount) per month . . . which means you've paid around $900 dollars (lets say a clean thousand, you got the two expansions for cheap).
it works out to be about 2% of the total amount of money you've paid to play WoW (assuming my shoddy math is correct).
so, for a 'regular' game it's like purchasing some DLC for $1 USD.
so really, players aren't being reemed at all. they're getting reemed when they buy things like MW2's stimulus package more so than this horse.

Well, if your in game life is better than your rl one, you might as well spend some cash on it
How much people are willing to pay to be better than others..
