NZGamer.com has just received new screenshots for the up-and-coming release of Firaxis' Civilization V.
The title, the fifth in the long running and critically acclaimed series, is set to be the most graphically interesting and complex Civilization title yet.
Check out the world map screens below:

In addition to the changes to the world map, there has been an obvious graphical update to the gameplay. The screenshot below shows off the decision to render units (and combat) in their entirety, instead of the single unit animations used in previous titles.

It also appears that Civilization V will have a slightly cartoony art direction when it comes to the avatars given to various civilization leaders you can play as, or against. Here's Queen Elisabeth looking a bit peeved:

Civilization V is currently set for release on the 1st of September 2010.

The move to hex based tiles is a surprising change for the franchise.
I'm a sucker for the Civilization games so I'll get this day one, but I'm probably more hyped for Elemental: War of Magic. It's turning out to be a good year for turn based strategy fans.
