Sony Patents Degradable Demos

Published By: Morgan Bates   On: Sunday 7 Mar 10:30 PM

Siliconera is reporting that Sony has filed a patent for what they describe as a 'degradable demo'.

The concept in the patent shows how the demo would be released as a 'full game' and gradually lose options/levels, until you purchase the full version.

If Sony does indeed roll with this, it would either be for PlayStation Portable - a handheld that's no stranger to hackers, a trial for PlayStation Store titles, or both.

It would be a great way for gamers to get a proper demonstration and give a better representation of the full product - than say, a 30 minute demo.

The biggest problem facing such a demo would be pirates tampering with the software to keep the full version.

Some demos you can't get a good feel for the game, so offering the whole game and as the day/time goes on it loses features, you get a better picture of what the game is like. Sounds like a good idea.

It'd be for demo's of online games too.

This might have something to do with the rumored PSN premium service they might be offering.

Oh man, if they get this working and hack safe (Which I doubt, pirates be no sleep CRAZY until they hack it) this would be such a freaking sweet idea.

Though...how big would the demo's be!

Haha, I thought the diagram was a joke when I first saw it. Someone at Sony has a sense of humour.

Sounds stupid to me. Sick of playing these short demos any way. Can't make a decision on a game in 30 mins

Yup, stupid idea. In fact, it's SO stupid, I just can't believe how stupid it actually is.

Next thing you know they'll be making demos that auto self-destruct after 20 mins, obliterating not just the demo, but also the console, the player, and half the house. It's a little known fact that Sony future-proofed the PS3 for this very situation by incorporating a slab of C4 and an ignition charge into each machine.

That's kind of the point of this style of demo. To have the near full/full game to play -as a demo-, and it'll become more like demos we play now over a period of time.

Explain to me how that is stupid for consumers compared to demo's we have now?

Only concern I have is what is the size of the demos? NZ broadband isnt exactly unlimited or anything near it, my 10GB/month wouldnt even last 2 demos.

Won't this mean you'll be rushing through the demo as fast as possible to get the most out of it? There'll be all sorts of new speed runs and easter egg opportunities for demos o_o
But two people using the same machine couldn't reasonably play the demo... one person would use up all the premium time.
I guess they can sort out all the details... but it seems strange.

Haha lol at the diagram and is this for real?! What a crap idea!?! So you download FFXIII at up around the 35 gb mark. Then 3.5 months later when that's done u sit through the massive opening cinemas and by time you're into the game proper your sword has shrunk to the size of a tooth pick and you have only 1HP lol What are they on?!
