A patent Sony filed back in 2008 has recently came to light sparking rumours that they are developing a 'universal controller'. "How would said controller work?" You might ask. The concept diagram in the patent (pictured below) suggests a touch screen would emulate the controller, while a receiver is programmed for a variety of hardware.

The concept is definitely thought provoking. Think about it: having a Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or some retro machines such as N64, Sega Megadrive or PlayStation One - all on the same controller. Convenient is putting it lightly.
Although this sounds good for gamers, it has a down side for console developers. They make a lot of money off third party controller - if this were to be a huge success it would hit Nintendo, Microsoft and the third-party controller makers in the pocket.
In addition, such a controller would face a slew of problems for gamers. The fact that you're looking away from the controller when playing a game makes it nigh impossible to use a touch screen as you can't feel the buttons.
Another issue is simply that gamers usually like their original controller - or will simply avoid another one based on brand loyalty.
When questioned about the usefulness of such a device an Xbox 360 user said "It would be weird and dumb, because I prefer the 360 controller design". These are a few issues that would face such a controller - if it is indeed more than a rumour.

Sony just patented it so that no one else can do it. Lol.
Well, I guess it would be good if, for example, all your old console controllers had been broken and you just needed to.. um. load a game. It would work fine for Flower on PS3, actually.
Touch screen controls (barely) work on the iPhone because you are looking at the screen that has the touch controls on it while you're playing so you can always see where your fingers needs to be. How does this work when you're looking at ya TV?? You have NO idea where the virtual buttons are without looking down?!?
