Nintendo Shows Off Their Australian Sales

Nintendo AU has released their sales figures for the first week of 2010 and the year is looking bright for Australian - and New Zealand - Wii and Nintendo DS gamers.

Market Resrearch company GFK has confirmed that as of week 1, 2010 Nintendo DS (all models of) is the highest selling console in Australia since the market research company's founding in 2000.

Nintendo Australia commented on the findings: “2009 was an exciting year for Nintendo”, says Nintendo Australia Managing Director Rose Lappin. “We released a new console with Nintendo DSi and some great games, as well as Wii MotionPlus. 2010 looks to be a big year for Nintendo again, we have Nintendo DSi XL coming, as well as some big titles across both consoles.”

Both of Nintendo's platforms have continued to dominate the Australia market holding 67% of the market share across both platforms on 2009. The NDS sold through 2.5 million units in Australia over the past four years, while Wii also continued to perform well throughout 2009, selling more than 1.7 million units in Australia.

Their top titles also did very well with New Super Mario Bros - which launched against Modern Warfare 2 - selling through 200,000 copies in just seven weeks on one console - something no other title has done that quickly.

Other high performing titles include Mario Kart - which sold through 500,000 units in just 87 weeks - and Wii Fit - which sold through 740,000 units - solid numbers for Nintendo's software sales. Unfortunately, we don't have sales numbers for third party titles.

Before anyone comments with "This isn't Australia, jerk." Nintendo Australia is our distributor too, so what's good for Australia is good for NZ.
