A bright 2010 for NZ Wii Owners?

To say the Nintendo brand has had a checkered past within NZ would be an understatement. With several distributor changes, up and down sales and finally the marketing & PR being handled by Nintendo Australia. Many kiwi gamers would feel the console war would just come down to PS3 vs. Xbox 360 in good ole Aotearoa.

However some interesting figures came out in the last week leading up to Christmas Day/Boxing Day. The NZ sales chart had Wii Sports Resort, Wii Play and Wii Fit Bundle taking out the top 3 positions.

Kiwi Nintendo Wii ‘core’ gamers saw a very limited line up in 2009, with the release of Metriod Prime Trilogy, The Conduit, Punch Out (which had limited NZ release) and New Super Bros Wii.

Could we be seeing a change in attitudes towards the Nintendo Wii in NZ?

This is great news. Lets hope Nintendo dominates NZ in 2010 like they are in the rest of the world.

Madworld was the best wii game of 2009, and even then that got pretty much ignored by a large majority.

I am surprised though, I swear we had more frat boys and "Its a sony!" kinda guys in nz

Wii marketing is focused on Women and games for kids. Therefore the copnsoles don't need to do much (graphics etc) and sell at full price. Mint for Nintendo

FINALLY! Some NZ game sales. *drools*

It's interesting to see that MW2 sold higher on the PS3, but it's so far after launch that it doesn't really tell the whole picture?

Any chance of getting these on a regular basis?

On topic: I think 2010 will be a fantastic year for the Wii. IMO, it has more exciting titles to look forward to than any other console.

Mind you, it'll be interesting to see what Final Fantasy XIII does to the market here. I know heaps of girls who are frothing at the mouth for it, but at the same time I guess they are not your typical girls. :P

The charts confirm that the Wii is a hit with the casual crowd but not with 'core' gamers. Only Nintendo published games make it on to the charts. Core third party titles like The Conduit, MadWorld, and Dead Space: Extraction had a lot of hype and good critical reception but just didn't sell.

The chances are that you'll find those games wouldn't have sold well no matter what console they were on. People who just own a Wii are not likely to be interested in titles like that. Especially Mad World, which strikes me as incredibly immature. People who are "core" gamers likely own more than one console, and as such those games are being weighed up against other titles that are available on the other platforms. When choosing games this holiday season, I was weighing up the Wii offerings against the PS3 offerings when it came to my cold hard cash, and I can't be the only one. So while I did get NSMBW and Wii Sports Resort, I didn't pick up anything else for the Wii because my money was spent on Assassin's Creed II, Modern Warfare 2, and Tekken 6. I can't be the only one doing this.

Besides, wasn't The Conduit kind of average?

Yeah. Conduit and MadWorld were pretty average. Both impressive for different reasons, but it was purely techical and artistic, gameplay for both was.. ok.

If you want a decent 3rd party Wii game, its pretty much Resident Evil or Okami. And the fact they are both previous gen ports says something. Infact, Capcom have been damn good to Wii - especially with Monster Hunter Tri coming. mmmm.

My husband bought us a Wii for xmas with the Sports Resort and Wii Fit, with the balance board etc. The Wii is more interactive and is fun for things like tennis and swordfighting. It is also good for tracking BMI and all that fitness stuff which is completely different to other consoles and games.
The Wii is also more competitive whereas we play our other games co-op. I will still be buying "real" games for the xbox 360 - we are still playing Borderlands at the moment. I see the two platforms as complementing each other rather than competing.

I can't understand this wii phenomenon, the only people I know that have bought it got it around launch then got over it in about a month and sold it, except my boss he bought one with wii fit for his wife for christmas as a last ditch effort to get her to start working out, don't like his chances...

A bright 2010? I don't think it has ever been a bright time for Wii owners.
