Twitter, Facebook & MoD Come to 360

Published By: Morgan Bates   On: Monday 16 Nov 2009 1:50 PM

Microsoft NZ has announced the roll out of Facebook, Twitter and Movies on Demand for Xbox Live, in New Zealand. Although these new features sound great, there are two things to note - especially for our under 18 readers.

First, you will need an Xbox Live Gold account to use Twitter, Facebook and Movies on Demand - after the Silver offer runs out. Second, the Facebook and twitter functionality will not be available to users under 18 (Facebook’s core demographic?)

In addition, for a limited time - from 6 AM November 21st until 6 AM November 24th - Silver account users can enjoy the new Gold features for free.

Tom Hunt, category manager for Xbox New Zealand, had this to say:

“We’re delivering some truly exciting social entertainment experiences to our members. The difference for Xbox LIVE has always been our community and we’ve already seen a tremendous response to these features in our public preview. It’s the community that drives us forward and enables us to pioneer new ways of connecting people through the entertainment they love.”

Here are the features Gold (and Silver, for a few days) members will be enjoying, from tomorrow:

• Facebook – Update your status to share what movie, game or entertainment you’re enjoying, connect with friends and view their Facebook stream, status updates and photos on the big screen. You can even compare your Xbox LIVE and Facebook friends lists to see which of your friends are on LIVE.

• Movies on Demand – Movies on Demand on Xbox LIVE offers a continually evolving catalogue of movies that can be purchased with Microsoft Points at the press of a button. You can also share the experience with up to seven friends through voice chat and Avatar integration on the TV screen.

• Twitter – Stay in-the-know by discovering, posting and replying to Tweets right on your Xbox 360. You can even view friend profiles, trends and conversations, or search to see who’s tweeting about your favourite game.

Once you've got twitter set up on your 360, remember to follow NZGamer.com

Hahaha you need Gold for this? Movies on demand might be worth it, but Twitter and Facebook? Why use a clunky interface when I can just use my Mac in the same room?

To be fair, it's retarded on any platform. The Uncharted 2 tweets were stupid and they didn't even work.

Yeah it's on a home console right? What home these days doesn't have a computer capable of doing it better?

I think people miss the point, Microsoft are trying to grab the casual market more and more. Even Sony is doing it, just not as much. Nintendo have been dominating because of the casual market and so they both want to try and take that market from them. Just wait till Natal and the Wand or whatever come...

I couldn't care less about most of the add-ons. LastFM may be cool but otherwise I don't care (since I don't use them...) but sounds like they mostly serve their purposes accordng to several who used the beta. Oh well guess there will be plenty of people who will like having them there.

Paying for XBL isn't casual. At all.

Anyway, this is all ridiculous. Facebook is already going down the sh*tter, so how lame is it going to be when it becomes the next MySpace and you've got this icon sitting there (a lot like the Home icon does on the PS3)? Twitter at least has a small advantage in that the social connection only needs to be one way.

The PS3 is apparently going to do this crap too, and the DSi is already doing it. Do people even want this?

The worst thing is all the misguided attempts to replicate the Wii on the belief that it is the controller that defines its success and not the nature of the games.

I wonder how the industry will survive the jump to the next generation at this rate...

I don't understand why Sony has decided to follow suit with the rumored facebook-update, THERE'S AN IN-BUILT BROWSER! All this time wasted on developing worthless sh*t like this when they can be working on things people actually want. This much fail cannot be contained.

Could this be soo much fail that its almost a win? hard to tell, im certainly not saying im the majority but im not going to use it... especially facebook?!?
Basically the 360 and ps3 are competing to be the No.1 'Entertainment' unit, so expect to see much more gimmicky sh!t put into it that they think people will use in order to be the console with the most features...
I would have prefered xbox to put a browser into there console first and foremost!

For the record, the first person to spam me with sh*t like "I'm playing the new Halo game with my wonderful Natal! - sent via Xbox 360" is getting taken off my friends list. That Farmville crap is bad enough already.

That would suck :/

@Donutta, as much as I agree there is nothing we can do about it really. I personally hate Social Networking sites for the reason that a certain one is big for a year then it just dies and usually sells out to sponsors, etc. So pretty much facebook is pretty damn pointless is the long run but I won't be surprised if they add different ones in the future :/ Heck I know Google is planning to launch some social thing soon. Google has sent my dad to Sydney (today actually) to meet the team and check it out apparently. (Though I think Google would top anything else) Guess we can only see :/

Also I do wish Sony and Microsoft would just focus on the market they already have, but guess they want to make even more sales and since everything these days is about making money..... 'sigh'

Google Wave? I'm in the beta. It's not really a social network; it's more of a hybrid of instant messaging and email. I'd actually use it over email now if it wasn't for the fact that there is no automatic checker in the beta and everyone just seems to forget they are in it.

I've always wondered why MS haven't just put a browser in there. It would work with Farcebook, twatter, youtube and like a million million other websites/cloud services?!? I actually find the PS3 browser to be somewhat useful as it lets you do things like download videos from gametrailers.com direct to your PS3 HD (you can queue up many vids at once & they download in the background) or download & install new themes direct from allps3themes.com etc. However overall the PS3 browser experience is not a good one as it could do with a LOT of optimising.
I guess MS's original MO was to distance themselves from being seen as a PC and not a console but now that they are going all out to integrate PC like capabilities into the Xbox360 I wonder why they still resist putting in a browser? Hell they could even force you to use bing :-) and maybe add mouse & keyboard drivers?? Nah, it'll never happen?! :-)

Ah I honestly don't know much about it really. Just heard a small bit from my Dad, guess I will hear various other things later in the week since he just left for Sydney now.

Where's the PS3 fanboy saying "My PS3 could do this in 2007. Welcome to next gen."?

But seriously apart from movies on demand, all this crap seems unnecessary.

Hes probably trying to avoid bringing it up, knowing the backlash potential when the PS3 gets cross game chat, Smart move too...well played PS3 fanboy!
