Fair Go: "Our advice - buy a Play Station"

Published By: Shaun Hunter   On: Wednesday 29 Jul 2009 10:19 PM

Wondering how Fair Go got on with trying to get to the bottom of the recent Xbox Live debacle? Well, they've offered the advice "It's very simple, buy a Play Station."

The show, which aired tonight, went to what appeared to be a great lengths to get an adequate response from Microsoft on the matter. Here's what they were told:

"Media statement: Fair Go
July 27, 2009
Statement from Xbox LIVE

Microsoft is a responsible company and believes in working together with families to use media in ways that are fun, safe and healthy. The company is very mindful of expectations about providing access to appropriate content on its Xbox LIVE marketplace.

By default, under 18s are not given access to Xbox LIVE or the ability to download paid content from Xbox LIVE until an adult has consented. A recent update to Xbox LIVE has now restricted downloads of content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace for the under 18s even where an adult had previously consented.

...

Until we can restore downloads of appropriate content for under 18s, we are also working on removing the ability for people under the age of 18 to add points that can't currently be spent. We encourage anyone affected by this issue to contact us via our customer call centre for a refund on their Microsoft points purchased. The details are www.xbox.com/en-nz/ or on 0508 555 592.

Xbox wants New Zealanders to be assured that we take a responsible view on access to appropriate content and Xbox 360 has family setting that enable parents to manage the gaming experience in their home."

You can read the full response from Microsoft and further details on the Fair Go website, or watch the segment of the show here.

Sadly it doesn't look like this situation may be resolved just yet, although if and when there are any updates, we'll let you know.

Come on Microsoft. Get your **** together. It really seems like a flawed system for guys under 18. So glad Ive got a PS3.

Glad I have an over 18 account but I can feel other peoples pain. And Im very disappointed they did nothing to resolve the issue even on public television. The whole 'Buy A Playstation' advice is stupid and obviously not what Microsoft wants to hear...so you better front up about all this MS or its your ass.

I don't see why they didn't invent a region so they could test this out insted of releasing an unfinished method of preventing under 18's from downloading inapropriate content.

Personally I think the "Buy a PlayStation" comment is an attempt to force Microsoft's hand. Fair Go are telling people to buy the rival product and Microsoft definitely won't like that.

Microsoft has handled this in the worst way possible and gotten some pretty bad publicity out of it. I can't believe that they would let under 18's upload money without any warning knowing full well that they wouldn't be able to spend it and not so much as an apology over the whole thing?! Appalling?!

Don't know about any of you but until I turned 18 I didn't have the means to shell out for an expensive gaming console anyway, a ps3 is at least $700. But still very pompous from microsoft as usual.

If I was under 18 and owned my own xbox I would definately tell fibs about my age though

this is stupid as hell. buying a playstation isn't a solution because the two consoles don't share the same downloadable content. if your dumb enough to fall for this advice you might end up with a console you don't want and without the downloads you were unable to get anyway on account of being a kid. on that note, what world do we live in where children can casually go out and pick up a ps3 because they are unhappy with whats happening on their 360. i personally dont know any kids who can whip out 800 dollars as soon as they get a lack of downloads on their 360. also its probably not that big a deal to a corporate giant like microsoft being on one of the smallest countries in the worlds tv show. if i was a giant and an ant tried to give me a telling off id probably just step on it.

This is true, but those 'old' people are the ones with $$$ who buy for younger people. It is true though the advice to buy a Playstation is more to flex some TV muscle. Would have been scary if Target ran the same story though...

Exactly. Alot of downloads on psn dont even see the light of day in the pal region, and microsoft has a big monopoly on quality downloadable games and add ons.

I watch TV1 for the breakfast and the occasional doco or real life crime series. Id have to say I watch it more than 3, with its night after night of american crime and legal dramas. I wouldn't watch 3 news either if it wasn't for samantha hayes

Only people 60 and over are going to believe Fair Go.

AND who tells the truth about their age online nowadays?
all my friends are like 25 on XBL.

I wouldn't underestimate the power of Fair Go mate.
It is consistently week in week out, the most watched show on NZ television. And as Ron said it's these 'oldies' that you speak of that would be the ones buying these consoles for the minors.

Guys if you watched the Fair Go segment carefully, after he made the comment about buying a Playstation the guy also said " but seriously.....". That would kinda indicate he was making a bit of a joke. Well thats my interpretation of it anyway
