Ten days ago we reported that 3D Realms was done for – as did a lot of sites. Having a ‘goodbye’ photo up on the 3D Realms site was also pretty convincing of their demise.
However, now it seems they’re alive - and in a legal battle with Take-Two. Today 3D Realms told Kotaku that it was just the Duke Nukem Forever team that was canned and the company still owns the Duke Nukem franchise.
“Despite rumors and statements to the contrary, 3D Realms (3DR) has not closed and is not closing. 3DR retains ownership of the Duke Nukem franchise. Due to lack of funding, however, we are saddened to confirm that we let the Duke Nukem Forever (DNF) development team go on May 6th”
Firing the Duke Nukem Forever team is understandable - given that they have failed to deliver a game after 12 years of development.
