BioShock PlayStation 3 Port Rushed?

Published By: Sam Collins   On: Sunday 5 Oct 2008 3:20 PM

Recently a thread surfaced on the 2KGames forums with two comparison shots between the PlayStation 3 demo of Bioshock and the Xbox 360 version. The screenshots below are of a dead Big Daddy and show some alarming differences in texture quality between the two versions.

PlayStation 3.

Xbox 360.

2K Elizabeth, a community manager on the 2K boards had the following to say about the quality difference.
” Hey guys,

First, I want to thank you for the acute attention to detail and the Spartan level of expectation our most devoted BioShock fans hold us to, and how excited you are and attentive to the BioShock PS3 demo. When we saw a post asking about issues found in the demo, we jumped on it immediately. And you know what, you're right. The texture in the PS3 demo of the downed Big Daddy does not match our level of quality either. This slipped by. We admit it. However, I want to assure you that this is an exception, and not a rule, and while I regret this oversight, we put a lot of love into making this game look amazing for the PS3 and I'm sure that when you play the rest of the demo you will agree that the textures are not all like this one instance.

As for the other issues and concerns, we are currently diligently working to replicate any bugs, and will report back to you with what we find. Thank you for your vigilance here and moving forward.”

Page six of the thread on the 2KGames forum has members posting more comparison shots between the 360 and PS3 versions with a noticeable difference in texture quality. These new screenshots suggest that either the Big Daddy textures are an isolated incident and the demo is from an old build or the texture quality needs another pass or two.

No word from 2KGames yet, aside from 2K Elizabeth’s post, as to whether the demo is an accurate representation of the final product or not so consumers looking to pick up the PS3 version may want to wait for 2K’s response to these claims.

Keep it locked to NZGamer.com and we’ll keep you updated on any Bioshock PS3 news as we hear it.

Maybe the demo's an older build? I'm buying regardless. I sold my 360 before the game came out, and i was really anticipating this game.

The water FX between the two versions will be the most important comparison - if differant at all.

But ofcourse! THe PS3 shot has less health, that could be some fancy new feature, the less health you have, the worse the graphics are...

I think that's the most likely thing, the discrepancies are too... obvious, really, for them to go unnoticed up to the final build.

Wow, I feel sorry for PS3 owners if this is the level of quality the rest of the game might suffer. Bioshock is a great game, not that the PS3 owners would want to play it. Most bashed it when it came out last year, just because it wasn't on their platform.

@JTO - I assume you're referring to friends who live under rocks(aka people who don't look up games on the web)? This game won GOTY at a lot of sites.

Wozza's that pretty shoddy work, just looking at the one screen. Poor work T2, Here I was thinking that ugly ports were a thing of the past.

I never planed on spending 100 odd dollars on a year old game but I did however plan on renting it, coz after all it did win many GOTY awards. And nothing has changed.

It will be interesting to see if there is any type of improvement in the retail version.

If you dig a little deeper in that linked thread you will see that the '360' screenshot of the big daddy is actually a fake. It's from the pc version.

You sure its fake? It has the 360 "A" button on the image. Even so, I've played the 360 version and textures weren't that pixelated.

perhaps the 360 screenshot was taken on an hdtv and then the other on an older screen . I myself would have to get a copy of the demo for my ps3 and compare it to my 360 version before I was convinced .
