World Of Warcraft Flying Off Shelves

Yes folks, Blizzard have done it again. World of Warcraft, Blizzards new MMORPG based in the Warcraft universe, is currently flying off store shelves faster than Blizzard could have hoped for with an estimated 250,000 copies being purchased in less than 24 hours across the USA alone. Midnight openings, queues around the block and stores running out of copies as soon as receiving them were common scenes on launch day.

In just it's first day, over 200,000 players created accounts on servers. On top of that, servers had upwards of 100,000 people playing at any given time. All these numbers add up to give Blizzard record figures for an MMORPG and make the game the fastest growing online game in history. It is also taking its toll on Blizzards servers and causing them some headaches. Many are already full to bursting point as Blizzard deploy additional servers to meet demand.

"We had a lot of confidence in World of Warcraft, but the success on day one far exceeded our expectations," said Mike Morhaime, president of Blizzard Entertainment. "We are extremely happy that players are enjoying our game, and we are doing everything we can to meet the demand and maintain a fun and smooth game experience for everyone playing."

The game was released here in New Zealand on Wednesday. While it did not receive quite as much fan fare as in the US, the game has still been shifting extremely well. This Christmas is shaping up to be a bumper time for gamers across all platforms.
