I remember back in the day when people first started talking about a Doom movie... Arnold Schwarzenegger was optioned for the lead role and he'd have a love interest while duking it out with the demons of Hell. He'd be equipped with an arsenal of weapons including the BFG and of course a whole lot of cheesy one-liners ("Go to Hell!" would more than likely have been one of them). Obviously, this never came to be and the project was put on the back burner. Doom 3 however rekindled Hollywood's desire to cash in and rake in some easy money, a script was written, a studio chosen, and a release date set.
With Universal backing the film for a 2006 release Polish director Andrzej Bartkowiak will be directing the horror-gorefest. Bartkowiak was the cinematographer on films such as Romeo and Juliet and The Devil's Advocate, and was the director of Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds and Cradle 2 the Grave... some extremely formulaic films but I'm sure he'll be capable of handling this project. Bartkowiak replaces Enda McCallion whom vacated the director's chair due to "personal reasons".
Now this is the part that gets me, The Rock has been optioned to play the nameless Marine. As comedic as seeing the WWE Superstar call an Imp a Jabronie and proceed to lay down the smack would be I think this is a terrible, terrible idea. Keep the film comedy free I say, we are dealing with the Invasion from Hell remember. Then again, The Rock is optioned for nearly every big Hollywood movie nowadays, in fact he's set to appear in another game-to-film translation, Spyhunter, which is due next year.
There seem to be a lot of films coming out soon born from hit videogames, Resident Evil 2: Apocalypse, Silent Hill, Metroid, BloodRayne, even talk of a Max Payne film. As long as they stick close to the source material we'll be seeing a lot of unforgettable blockbusters hitting our screens very soon! As always hop on over to our forums to share your thoughts!
