The Rock is one of the most influential stars in WWE history.
In terms of wrestling stars, the absolute upper echelon, especially those who have or are working for the WWE have a DVD chronicling their careers. Hogan, Stone Cold, Flair and Bret Hart to name a few, and one Dwayne Johnson otherwise known as The Rock is no exception. The third generation superstar certainly has made a splash in his WWE career, and the door may still be open for a return to the ring one day, but until then his star continues to rise in Hollywood, predominantly on the back of his charismatic wrestling career.
The 3 disc-set covers selected matches throughout his career, right from 1997, until 2003, rather than a story of his life and career, as featured on some other WWE Superstar DVD’s. A total of nineteen matches are included, along with brief segments included between matches, to provide a back-story to feuds occurring at the time as well as highlighting other achievements not featured on this DVD that occurred between matches on this set.
Seeing the large majority of this set is matches, it’s always going to be difficult not to nitpick too strenuously over the matchers included and excluded. However it’s apparent that the WWE have the mix just about right in this compilation, with matches spanning from the start of The Rock’s career through to his bout at Wrestlemania 19.
While there are no real 5-star matches in this list, there isn’t any duds either, with the only real complaints being that there’s probably one too many matches against Mankind on disc 1, with their epic “I Quit” match somehow not being included, and too many big pay-per-view bouts overlooked in favour of matches from Monday Night Raw.
In addition to the 19 matches, included on disc 3 are a selection of promos and a compilation of The Rock’s best one-liners with fellow Superstars, celebrities and announcers. This bonus content adds a more comedy element to the DVD, and really shows how much of a charismatic star he was.
Weighing in at around nine hours total viewing time, this DVD is a must have for any Rock fan, or wrestling fan craving the days of the old ‘attitude era’. Whilst not including any physical participation in the DVD from the great one himself, this set does a more than adequate job of spotlighting the biggest matches from one of the most influential stars in wrestling history, and will leave you craving the Brahma Bull to return to our screens every week.
