I've noticed that blogs, for me, come into fruition though a variety of circumstances. Usually; a) I'm procrastinating writing that damn thesis and b) other blogs and comments get me thinking.
Liam's blogs especially have gotten a few ideas rolling around (pity I don't have the same brain waves concerning my Uni work). Take his latest Gaming myths article for instance!
Ranting at the pigeon-holing attitudes of almost every person in existence? Hell yes!
Come on, we've all been guilty of it at some point, hey? I myself have a tendency to file all Americans under the category of small minded or arrogant. Or even simply 'American' - and I'm sure everyone knows what I'm talking about here. But this is simply not true, or fair. The few Americans I know personally couldn't be further from the stereotyping the rest of the world has set from those bad eggs that always float to the top and become the norm by which a whole country is judged.
But the guts of all this is why pigeon-hole gamers? Must we all be held up alongside those who play games more than they work, or as much as they work? Just because I don't like a game that is considered 'the best thing out there' doesn't make me any less of a gamer.
Although I'll admit I've been guilty here too. If any of you have listened to Podcast 28 (I think?) you'll hear me ragging on Shaun because he won't consider playing FFX-2. I even threated to lock him in a basement with only a the game and the necessary items with which to play it. But at the end of the day I'm not going to consider him anything less than what he is just because he won't play it. I still think he should at least look at it though....
Not long after commenting on Liam's blog (in mammoth proportions too, sorry Liam) I was told that, and I quote, 'ff12 was balls, ysolla.' Point taken. Now that's fine, seriously. But the way in which this verdict was delivered almost left me reeling. It was like 'so, because you have said so, so it is, and it's wrong for me to think otherwise?' Rack off mate. I accept you don't like it (to be honest, I can see why), but frankly, I freaking LOVE it. I even started again after getting 60 hours in and having the Playstation 'break' and someone losing my game in his attempt to correct it (so he could get his Sing Store songs back).
Another game that is frequently contested here that one. See kate_robyn's piece of brilliance on Sing Star etiquette? I'll only play that game if seriously, seriously drunk, which in itself doesn't happen often. So when Ysolla + Sing Star actually happens, it always = EVERYONE busting out the camera to catch the hallmark moment. And that moment has only occured twice (Once was sober, to my great chagrin. I think Emily could convince people to do almost anything she wants them to). I, now, accept the fact that I'm surrounded by Sing Star fanatics. What's more is I've accepted that I'm dating the biggest fanatic of them all. And I'm pretty sure they've accepted that I'm not going to play and stopped trying to get me drunk so I will.
I'll just tell them all I have work tomorrow. At 8. Works every time...
So what was I talking about again? Oh, right. I'm not any less of a gamer because I don't like the games you like. I'm not any less of a gamer because I can't co-ordinate analogue sticks in Halo or Oblivion well enough to play them or because I have to look at the move list in Soul Calibur IV. I love graphic styles that I don't expect you to, and I'll still play the original Crash Bandicoot if it tickles my fancy at the time. We could all do with some fancy ticklinig sometimes. I appreciate every iota of effort gone into a game whether I like the game itself or not. And most of all, I really don't expect the whole gaming universe to agree with me. Amen.
