God of War II

Published: Tue 28 Apr, 2009 | On:

God of War II starts out not too long after the first game ends, with Kratos now being the God of War.
However, he's gotten a bit too ambitious with his latest conquests, and the Gods now seek to dethrone him.
After being tricked by Zeus, he is quickly defeated, and once again must fight his way back out of Hades (its a gamely tradition), and seek to change his fate, so that he may take vengeance upon those who have wronged him.

Although the difficulty of this game isn't as high as it is on the first game, I believe it vastly improves on the first in many ways.

The combat system feels more fluid, and the weapons each have a different weight behind them.
The enemies, while they don't feel as powerful, come in wider varieties and have a smarter AI so you can choose to fight them in a number of different ways; some resulting in a more gory outcome than others.

The boss battles in particular are enough to impress even the most staunch of people.
The scale of things you have to do in some of the battles is just incredible.
Even if you're not finding the battle particularly difficult, you'll still be sitting there saying to yourself "damn this boss battle is f***ing cool!"

The environment is bigger than in the first, and the long routes you must take to achieve certain things, and then miraculously wind up back exactly where you need to be, are done incredibly well, to the point of staying interesting throughout the game, as you seldom have to do the same thing twice.

The story builds on the first game's story in a big way.
There's twists you won't see coming that will leave you dumbfounded, but at the same time wondering why you didn't see it coming.
It sets you up for a truly epic time in God of War III, and will leave you wanting more Kratos.

Overall, God of War II is a thoroughly enjoyable game. The soundtrack is epic, the story is enthralling, the gameplay is fun, yet difficult. Its not for the faint of heart, its not for the softer gamers.
It is a game that, on the harder difficulties will go out of its way to kick your ass.
My only complaint about this game is that its left me very impatient for God of War III.

If you enjoy a challenge, you love carnage, and you enjoy a great story, and you haven't played God of War or God of War II, then I strongly recommend you head on down to your local retailer and grab yourself a piece of the action.
