Dragon Age: Origins
Published Wednesday 17 Mar 2010 8:21pm | PlayStation 3Dragon Age: Origins is best described as a life-eating beast. Yes, I'm serious.
Lets get this out of the way: I'm a midcore gamer. I'm not a hardcore gamer. I don't play many games. I play a moderate amount. I only play the cream of the crop, I can't be stuffed playing crap, and even then I am selective.
I do not go on marathon gaming sessions, unless the game in question has the word "Zelda" in the title. Yet this game was one of those mind-blowing, addictive, gaming-life-changing games for me.
You know those games? They come in all packages. I've had some in my life. Kingdom Hearts, Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Those are the big ones. This wasn't that big, but it was the Star Ocean for me: those ones that eat your life for a couple of weeks, that move your emotions, that make you care for your characters, the world, the ones that make you EXPERIENCE a game rather than PLAY it.
With great graphics, great story, great character-interaction, this game is a must. As I said, it will let you EXPERIENCE the world, rather than simply play through as a spectator.
Now: I would highly recommend this game on the PS3, which is what I played on, but it would be best played on a PC. This is a HARD game. I'm not that bad at games either: its a well-versed "complaint" on the interwebs: normal mode feels like hard. Random battles can be much harder than boss fights. I'm serious. And there is no grinding, so you can't cheat your way through the game.
Normal mode IS hard. You will die lots. Some areas I struggled with far more than others. When those moments came out, I switched down a difficulty level temporarily, that made it more fun for me. If you aren't willing to do that, you're going to be in for a tough ride, but its got sweet pay-off.
Just play it.
