Batman: Arkham Asylum
Published Monday 28 Sep 2009 10:57pm | Xbox 360The story begins with Batman taking down the Joker (again) and taking him personaly to Arkham Asylum (again). After escorting him passed a couple of dozen guards and some security checkpoints to his new home, the Joker gets loose of the guard's custody (again) and starts gaining control of the asylum and freeing all the prisoners (not again). As Gotham PD is a little lazy to get some decent cops, its up to you to go after the Joker and take him down(...again). Along the way you will run into some of your old acqaintances who arnt too happy about you putting them in there. Over all the Batman story is golden, with a good amount and twists and betrayals that keep you interested till the final showdown. The story is also based on the comic books and not the movies so some people may not be all too familiar with all the badies.
Arkham Asylum's combat is very well done. You fight just like you would expect Batman to fight with his quick but strong punches/kicks, his ability to counter at ease and having him using his gadjets with lightning like reflexes in the midst of a brawl. As you would expect, Batman is also full of stealth situations. It is incredibly enjoyable to slowly pick of your enemies off one by one and watch them go from cocky and confident to very nervous and hanging together in groups, constantly watching each other's backs to becoming terrified, watching out only for themselves and blind firing a few bullets around every corner they come too.
During the story there are also riddles left by, who else? The Riddler. This is a nice little extra feature added. Throughtout the story there are plenty of iconic villians that batman put away, who act as the game's bosses. If a boss unfortunetly kills you, during the B man's final moments they brag a little bit at you of their victory which encourages you to hit the retry to show them who wears the pants in this asylum. All of the bosses' goad you differantly too, the Joker has his creepy and funny sense of humor, Harley Quiin acts like a 7 year old, Bane acts all tough, Posion Ivy acts sexy, Scarecrow is scary and so on.
Apart from the main story there are also challenges which let you replay the main fist fights and stealthy moments in the game which had me hooked on the game (surprisingly) longer than the story did. A feature that i think should of been added in the game was to replay the game with all your unlocked abilities which made me not want to start again with nothing.
In conclusion, Arkham Asylum is a kick ass game that is alot of fun from start to finish. The challenges are also a blast to play and will keep you entertained on your days off. Unfortunetly the lack of replayability with the story knocks a few points off the final score as the challenges will only keep you hooked for so long. In my opinion, you should only buy this game if your a Batman fan, however this is definetly atleast worth a rent or two.
