Eye of Judgement

Published Wednesday 9 Jun 2010 7:20pm | PlayStation 3

4/10

The Eye of Judgment seems like such a good idea down on paper. It is what every child and adult would have wanted at one stage, to be able to play a card game with holographic monsters. For the time being, The Eye of Judgment is as close as you are going to be getting. And in my opinion, you might as well not bother.

The Eye of Judgment's game play is basically relying on accessories you will get in a box with the game. You will be given the Playstation eye, a stand, a playing mat, a deck of cards, a booster pack and the game disc all for $169. You will have to set up the Playstation eye to face the mat where you will place the cards like you would in a game of Pokemon or any other trading card based game. You will then play as you and your opponent take turns. You will be able to see your card(s) on the screen that are right in front of you. They will show up with 3D holograms on top of them.

While these features may sound great, it really is not. The whole game is just awfully difficult and boring. The time I played Eye of Judgment was tedious because I could never find enough room to set up the bulky mat which has to be perfectly laid out to play. The camera will need to be facing right onto the mat or it will not work. Very annoying if you knock the camera a little bit. All I could think the whole time was that this game is great on paper and as a tech demo, but it just fails with being practical and fun. It really is not much fun.

Another note I should largely add in as a horrible negative is the update for this game when you buy it. Normally we are use to Sony releasing large updates for their games. The Eye of Judgment takes this to the next level and introduces a 1.5Gb update the moment you pop the disc in. You are not going to be happy.

After all of this negativity I am glad to say I can identify a group of people where this game and its package will be of great use, future Playstation Move owners. This game can be found for about $70 at some stores who still stock it, great deal if you are looking for the Playstation Eye on the cheap with a free game that really is not anything worth bothering with. While The Eye of Judgment seems like a great idea on paper, the final result is nothing but an experience which leaves you with nothing special.

I had so many problems with this game. It had so much potential but at the end it was so frustrating. The lighting in the room had to be super bright and there were always times when the cards could not be read (scanned). what peeved me off as well was the need to pay to register a deck of new cards eventhough you had already paid to buy them in the first place.

And hey, I got stung by that 1.5GB update too! damn!!

Good review :)

Haha, sounds like you had all the same problems that I had.

Good (and bad) to know that someone shared the exact same issues as me. :P

Thanks for the comment :)

Agree with your review! Concept was reeeallly cool, but the gameplay just fell flat.

Online is pretty tedious too. The game actually tells you which cards to draw (so they know you're not cheating XD) and your mic is on 100% of the time, which is quite annoying for both players if there's heaps of background noise

Haven't played it since the first week I got it, so I missed that update..

Good job, soyerz :)
