Halo Wars

Published: Fri 27 Nov, 2009 | On: Xbox 360

9/10

As we all know, RTS games on the consoles are very little. And when those very little of those RTS games make it to the consoles, people normally complain that the game should be on a PC where all RTS games should belong. While I agree with this (keyboard and mouse are very helpful), Halo Wars turns around this view and makes me realise that RTS games on a console is possible to be something that is great. But what makes this game stand out so much is the fact that it fits the 360 so well that porting this game to the PC just would not fit.

The reasons for why the game would be a lot better on the 360 is that Halo Wars has been worked around the 360 and its controller. This is not normally the case with an RTS that has been ported over to the 360. The controls on this game are very tight and responsive. They have done such a great job on the controls that the right trigger, Y and X button are never used through the whole game.

The visuals in this game are something quite impressive. When playing the game on singleplayer or multiplayer you an see the detail that has been put into every unit or part of the enviroment in the game. I loved the visuals so much that I enjoyed zooming in and out of the map to view different angles of the units or enviroment. This all picks up when two enemies armiers collide. The battles on this game are epic. Seeing over 100 units just going for it is quite the site. Then add in the leader powers of the covenant and the USNC and you have quite an ammount of ownage. However, the place where this games visuals stand out the most in this game is the cutscenes. The visuals in the cutscenes are almost realistic and beleviable. The camera angles are also perfect to go with the visuals to make the cutscenes look like a movie. Quite impressive. Although, I should point out that all of these visual features will just go to waste if you are gaming on an SD tv.

You can go to Wikipedia etc to find out about the story and units etc because I want to get to the big selling point of this game, the multiplayer. The multiplayer in this game is amazing with replay. 3v3 is just amazing fun and can be very difficult. Plan you strategy wrong, and your opponents can come and take you and your units out within minutes. The ammount of straigies you could choose is quite extensive (though limited). I say that it is limited because this game lacks an ammount of units. There are not a lot of units to choose from if you are on either Covenant or USNC. There is also no option to be The Flood which is a bit of a shame.

I will finish this review here as I do not want to spoil any of the game. I had no hype for this game so when I picked it up I was amazed by it. Do not think twice about this game, every 360 owner should atleast try it.
