Fallout 3s world is basically just our own but blown to hell. Thats whats interesting about it. This crazy place full of raiders, slavers and super mutants could come true.
Unlike many other RPGs which are usually set in a fantasy world where almost none of it could ever happen. Fallout 3 has that thing that seems to be spouted alot lately "immersion".

You really feel like you're being sucked into this world just like you're own but so inherintly different.
More games need to give you this feeling of immersion so that you actually believe in this story they are trying to tell. While fantasy worlds full of eleves an magic and what have you are great its also good to feel like you could actually be living in the world. Fallout 3 makes you feel like you're actually a survivor in this nuked up wasteland.
Its also one of the only games that really rewards you for acting neither good nor evil but a shade of grey.
