Forget Guitar Hero & Rockband

I’ve played an instrument of some sort since I was 14 and currently play bass.

I suck at Guitar Hero/Rock Band type games, I get the rhythm and timing of the games, however after hearing of people playing these games for hours on end, and I ask myself – ‘WTF?’

Granted you’ll never learn the guitar solo to Sweet Child of Mine in a few hours off the bat, but surely it would be more gratifying to learn an instrument and the song properly?

Don’t get me wrong, people playing games these days has moved away from the pizza eating, pimpled face 14 year old and social gaming via titles like Singstar, Rockband and Guitar Hero has truly redefined what a gamer really is these days.

However if you have the chops to be really good at these games - why not spend your time on the real thing on a mic, guitar or drum kit?

Many Joe Blog's play guitar, few become famous. Seems easier to become good at Guitar Hero than real guitar, and imo more fun. But hey, I'm sure if I never played GH, I'd be well into real guitar by now, but nowhere near how good I am at GH.

I've always found Guitar Hero just fun to pick up and play - you've got the rest of the instruments already there for you, and instead of being limited to your skill set, you're limited to the set list.

Yes, I probably could have learnt to play the guitar in the amount of time I've been playing Guitar Hero, but I think I probably get more fun out of playing GH - even if that does sound a little sad, hah.

i see your point, i felt it was a little gay that the only games qualifying for WCG from nz were ones like Guitar Hero and Fifa 08 etc. I mean really why have sport games FFS

Guitar Hero is instant gratification. You can feel like Jimi Hendrix with like... 4% of the effort required.

However, what I wonder about is the people who spend US$299 on a Rock Band drum kit. Surely you'd just want to buy a real drum kit instead?

all the fun of rocking without the tedious scale practising = guitar hero.
Plus I've never picked up my electric guitar, played a song, and been all, "man that was fun!" - it was more for practise sake.

I never liked practising musical intrusments, on Guitar Hero there's alot more noise, therefore alot more exciting!

i've only played GH once. was quite fun but found it hard to play song that i know how to play on an actual guitar as my fingers remember the real notes and muscle memory takes over, so generally i sucked.

will get GH:WT though, i like the idea of being able to play a mini drum set with out having to take up half a room with a real set.

Haha I love how you always refer to the 14 year old pimple faced, pizza eating gamer... I'm not too bad on the drums on GHWT (I've been a drum fanatic for years) - A real drum kit, is too expensive; so I have to make do with what I have.
