Introducing: Hydrophobia

Introducing: Hydrophobia

Here's a game that many of you probably don't know about, but one that I've kept my eyes on for a while now.  Hell, the game grabbed my interest before there were even any screenshots to view, and the developers (Blade Interactive) were still using rubber duckies to demonstrate their gaming engine.

You play as Kate Wilson, an aquaphobic systems engineer onboard the Queen of the World - a futuristic, city-sized cruise liner.  Why she takes up a job on a cruise liner when she's aquaphobic is beyond me.  Anyway, the hook in the story is when terrorists make an attack on the cruise liner, forcing Kate to overcome her fears and put a stop to the terrorist activity.

The Queen of the World

Yeah, the story could be better.  But it's the game engine I'm interested in.  Blade Interactive are promising to deliver the first video game to feature realistic, dynamic, flowing water - all rendered in real-time.  Forget about BioShock's water.  Sure that water looked good, but it wasn't dynamic, and it didn't fully interact with its surroundings like Hydrophobia's will.

I'm hoping that Hydrophobia, if nothing else, can at least provide some interesting and innovative puzzle-based gameplay that hasn't been seen before in any other game.  Or maybe another company can utilize the engine, and bring it up to the graphical standard seen in BioShock, giving us the best of both worlds.

Kate Wilson

It's due out some time this year, for both PS3 and Xbox 360.  Blade Interactive revealed the first footage for the game at this year's E3.

looks pretty interesting - if they can keep it from seeming gimmicky theres probably a lot you can do with the water in a puzzle-esque sense.
anyone remember in myst where you empty a chest, then make it float to the key? classic.
float stuff and holding breath FTW!

Damn, here I was hoping it would be a game about Rabies :X

Looks pretty sweet. Like the idea of dynamic free flowing water. Could play an important part in future games.

It doesn't sound like it's gonna be a great game. but it will be interesting to see how they do with the water.

Yeah it probably won't be great. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the game's main purpose was to advertise the HydroEngine. I'll definitely give it a rent though.

I'll just wait for the engine to be put into a decent-sounding game. That is, if it's as cool as it sounds and other developers want it.

Unless of course, this game miraculously turns out to be a hit.

Could be awesome - needs sharks and if you're in the water like that screenshot, it should be almost impossible to run at full pace.

The water will be very interesting. A puzzle involving using currents to float objects etc could be fun... Reminds me of metal gear solid 2. hehe. Thanks for blogging this.

I never knew this game was in development for so long considering it only came out a couple of months ago.

Shame it turned out to be a much lower budget production than originally planned. It's interesting to look back at this blog now that the game is released!
