Worms 4: Mayhem

If you've played a 2D worms game before then just imagine it in 3D, as in a perfect switch with no enhancements to make things more exciting or worse. It's a perfect port of 2D to 3D gameplay. You have a team of 4-6 worms which all can be customized to suit your explosive needs then 2 teams duke it out in a war to kill or reach a specific goal like CTF, KotH. You have a heck load of weapons and that's no exaggeration. You have over 50 different weapons to play with such as a simple bazooka or baseball bat (bonk) to something huge and powerful like Air raids or the holy hand grenade of Antioch. Freaken sweet. And if that doesn't satisfy you, you can go ahead and make your own weapons of mass destruction using a huge variety of different items to further blow stuff up. Every time you win a game you get coins which you can buy more stuff to play around with and get more goodies. You can play online with friends around the world (although there are barely any servers going today.) or locally using the same computer or LAN network with friends. With friends it's a hilarious fight and your friendships will be broken in a matter of turns. Gameplay wise this game delivers well.
Design
The graphics of the game is what you'd expect in a PS2, XBox or PC game of 2005. Standard stuff, you can't go wrong. The HUD is well designed giving a nice cartoonish feel and the game is very colourful with tons of different fields to play on each with their own distinct feel. Wild west fields are perfect and forests are designed perfectly. Very well polished with barely any errors.
Story
Honestly. You think you could make a decent story about Worms blowing each other up...you can't and honestly the writers didn't see that either so they decided to make a story that simply has you visiting different eras to play in different fields. You start in the city where the professor wants you to blow up government buildings...no comment here. Something goes wrong and you end up going back in time to partake in, what else, blowing stuff up. The story is mediocre and you'll find that you are just skipping most cut scenes to get to the action. Decent at best.
Overall
If you've played any worms game including old 2D ones you'll know what to expect. The only minor complaint I have is that moving around sometimes is a bit of a pain and jumping automatically jumps forward sometimes which can really get annoying if you're trying to get into a position to get a head shot. It's one of those games you install, play it, have fun and play it again in a months time. Overall though it's a great game and if you're a fan of the worms series, pick it up. If not, give it a shot anyway. Blowing stuff up has never been more enjoyable...except in maybe Bomberman.
