Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Published Monday 16 Nov 2009 3:25pm | Xbox 360Now, I am a fanboy. I thrive to the latest games, play them over and over, and wait till the new one comes out because the older one starts to suck after much time, and I end up never playing it again, because it's not new, and OMG I haz to haz new.
But, I can heartedly say that is unlikely to be the case with MW2. An anticipated game of this level is nearly always a seller. It doesn't have to even be that great for it to become a multi-million dollar success. Take Far Cry 2 for instance. It sucked. But it still sold many, and made success.
Now, MW2 appeared to go down the same pattern of hype. But even though the Devs knew they could hand out a re-skinned CoD4 and get the equal cash, they didn't. MW2 delivers so much on a scale compared to CoD4 or [Waw]. While it isn't a revolutionary discovery of relativity, and wont have the amazement of CoD4, I can safely say it is better.
First, The story. Five years after the ending of CoD4, the Russian civil war rages on and escalates daily. You are once again plunged into the chaos as a normal soldier, on the front lines. This style of CoD gameplay hasn't been lost and I could even say improved, to where it feels a lot more realistic in the sense of tyranny and danger. You switch between quite a few characters, each one different in a different environment. I won't give too much away, and while it is rather so-so short, I don't think anyone can be dissapointed, and I believe the story is just the right length.
Multiplayer. The only actual mode some will still play for months on end, is brilliant, and balanced. Maybe too balanced. I only have a slight feeling that the new MP40 is the M4, which is almost overpowered and incredibly accurate at hip-fire and scope, and I have a few qualms with it's manoeuvrability. Apart from that, not too many people use it anyway, and the rest of the guns are perfectly in-tune and balanced properly with a great perk and attachment system which has been perfected to say the least.
Now, I am very dissapointed with the lag. I have not been in a game yet where I don't have yellow/red bar, and the lag is very visible in the killcam from the Americans draining my connection. IW decided again to have a host server system, instead of allocating servers or providing better service for the Oceanic reason. This is a major blow to the review, and I am extremely dissapointed with the inability to play well because of lag.
(And no, I'm on 20GB Bandwidth broadband with Vodafone)
Special ops is a nice addition, but like FF in ODST, will lose it's charm after you've completed it on Veteran, and you won't want to go back to that level because it would've took so damn long in the first place...
Apart from this, it is actually highly enjoyable, but it can never live up to the hours of marathons of Nazi Zombies I had.
It definitely deserves a buy, and even with the hefty price tag there's no way a true gamer couldn't enjoy the hours of fun bestowed in IW's masterpiece of gaming history.
Also, the meta-game mode is totally LOL.
Pigger Out.
