Guitar Hero II

Published Tuesday 5 Dec 2006 1:17pm | PlayStation 2

9/10

Sequel to the hugely successful Guitar Hero, the second instalment offers a whole range of new songs to tear your fingers up on. With the Guitar Hero guitar controller in your grasp, you step straight into the shoes of a rock star, and you’ll soon be a master shredder and all-round guitar-god.

What makes the game so addictive and refreshing from the countless sequels and same-old titles on the market today is the innovative guitar-shaped controller. With a bar to strum and fret keys on the neck of the guitar, the aim is to play along to the music and hit all the notes as they approach. It can become a very frantic and exhilarating experience as you to try to hit each and every note to rack up huge combos.

Featuring 40 main songs, including Strutter, Killing in the Name, Message in a Bottle, Sweet Child O’ Mine and Freebird - along with a whole bunch of unlockables - you’ll have plenty of ammunition to keep you strumming all night long. Each song has four difficulties: easy, medium, hard and expert. The higher the difficulty level, the more notes you’ll be playing, and a whole lot faster.

While Guitar Hero 2 is a great single play game, a lot of enjoyment comes from the multiplayer modes: cooperative, face-off, and pro face-off. Co-op allows you and a friend to take lead and rhythm for some songs, and for others, guitar and bass. Face-off is the same as it was in the original Guitar Hero, where you play alternating parts of the song and try to out do each other. Similarly, pro face-off pits you against your opponent, but you’ll be playing the exact same notes of the song.

Even though it is a bit pricey, at $170 for the game and guitar, it is a barrel of fun and is the perfect game to pick up for your parties this holiday season.
