Sony Putting a Stop to PSP Go Sales?

Published Saturday 22 Aug 2009 3:36am | 50
Tags: PSP Go, Price, Expensive, Crossdressers, Australians, Australian Crossdressers

Australia's PSP Go price has been announced: $450.

"Ok" you say, "so what?"

Well, good sir, the new PS3 Slim's pricing has also been announced, and Australians will get that for $500 – only $50 more than a PSP Go. For their extra $50 they can get HD gaming, Blu-ray, and so on.

So not only do they get the same $150 price hike over the US price of the PS3 Slim that we get, but they get the added insult of the PSP Go's price. That's like getting knocked out by a smack to the face, then kicked in the balls for good measure.

Crossdresser

Lucky you don't have balls right? Oh my bad...

Another comparison to make is that their regular PSP 3000 price is $300. So they'll be paying an extra $150 for a smaller PSP with Bluetooth and 16gb of memory, but no UMD drive.

Why am I going on about the Australians though right? This is a New Zealand site after all! Well, Señor, judging by our comparible PS3 Slim pricing, we're about to feel that very same kick in the pants.

Our regular PSP price is $330 (AU $270, so we're undercutting them slightly there), and our PS3 Slim price is $630 (AU $515, so they're undercutting us). Obviously our pricing is very similar to the Australian pricing, so direct conversions should be fairly accurate.

Let's do some converting then! Converting AU $450 (PSP Go money) to our finest Ernest Rutherfords gives us a total of almost exactly NZ $550. Whoa, whoa, whoa... Wait on just a moment, homeboy.

What is the price of a PS3 Slim in New Zealand? $630.

What was the difference between the Australian PSP Go and PS3 Slim prices? AU $50.

What is the difference between my converted PSP Go price and the selling price of a PS3 Slim in New Zealand? $80.

What is NZ $80 in Australian moolah? $65.

These prices are far too similar for us not to be making huge, sweeping assumptions. Comparing price on price with Australia, I just gave you the likely price of the PSP Go in New Zealand: $550. $80 less than a PS3 Slim.

PS3 Slim

Pictured: The PSP Go's main rival.

The PSP Go will be $550 when it hits New Zealand.

There, I said it. Now let's wait and see if I'm right. But in the mean time, my trusty steed, we're going to make some more comparisons. What's that? You gave up reading long ago? Well then, I'm going to make some more comparisons.

Likely PSP Go price: $550

Original PSP price at release (according to NZGamer): $470.

Difference: 4 years, 4 months and $80 more expensive.

Likely PSP Go price: $550

Xbox 360 Core Arcade Console: $350

Difference: $200 more.

Xbox Pro Console: $450

Difference: $100 more.

Xbox Elite Console: $600

Difference: $50 cheaper.

Likely PSP Go Price: $550

Nintendo Wii Console: $450

Difference: $100 more.

Likely PSP Go Price: $550

Nintendo DSi Handheld Console: $370

Diffrence: $180 more.

I read articles on various websites reporting the Australian cost of the PSP Go. Gizmodo's headline used our favourite acronym "WTF", while Kotaku emphasised the better value in buying a PS3. In the comments sections people assumed the Go must have an OLED screen or something. Well no, young Skywalker, it's almost exactly the same hardware 4 years on, but at a higher price.

Discuss.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if the PSP Go is going for $550. How many people do you think will buy it? No many, I think.

I'm like you mate. I just cant see the PSPGo being a success for Sony. Every time I start thinking about the PSPGo I get a overwhelming feeling of "what the hell for?"

Okay so its a nod to digital distribution which many see as the future but why not wait a few years and kick that motion of with the PSP2?

Good blog. Interesting figures there. And I'd agree with your PSPGo pricing. Maybe it's another marketing ploy for Sony to push more PS3's into homes.

And G22, personally, when I think of PSPGo, I think of Mini-Disc Player.

Good Blog! However there's one price comparison you missed…
Likely PSP Go Price: NZ$550.00 (which I agree with 100%)
Apple iPod Touch 16GB: NZ$498.00
Difference: $52 more?!?!
With Sony's recent announcement of smaller downloadable games (Minis), that will include iPod Touch staples like Fieldrunners and Hero of Sparta, they have basically announced that they are tackling the iPod Touch head on in the gaming realm. I'm amazed then that they would actually price themselves higher the iPod Touch model with the equivalent internal memory (which they have done in Austrailia where the 16GB Touch is A$419)?!? Then again, this is Sony we're talking about?!? The only saving grace might be that these are RRPs and retailers should sell at less than this just like they already have with the PS3 slim?! $499 would make a LOT more sense! Time will tell...

Nice write up.
But as guido said above its a conparison on the RRP basis.
Preordering PS3 in NZ is already $598/599 at mightyape and EB games respectively.
I think the PSP GO will debut (in stores) below $499.
Overall its a ridiculous price for a portable gaming device IMO lol, id rather pay $250+ more and get an iPhone, or just get a Touch that has alot more use.
I fact for xmas Ill buy a PS3 Slim AND an iPhone.
PSP has never even come into the equation and never will.

I really hope this thing flops to show Sony a leason that no one wants a console with less features at such a large price. I really do hope this flops like HD DVD.

let 'em price it as they want, if kutaragi wants to dig his own grave then let 'im do it. Sony still has its fair share of hardcores keep in mind.

Thanks for the comments guys. Yeah I realise now that I missed the iPod Touch comparison. But really, repackaging what you've sold for 4 years, pricing it near iPod Touch territory and calling it a competitor is a bit of a d*ck move, Sony.

Yeah, I used to be one of them. But there have been 3 or 4 Sony products I have wanted lately that have just been completely ridiculously priced, so I'm having a rethink.

You forgot another comparison...
PSP 3000 = ~$300
16GB Pro Duo = ~$160
Total = $460

If only the PSPgo has motion control AND touchscreen. It will sell like hotcakes :D

Yeah that is one option. It still won't be as cheap as it should be. As far as I know PSPs aren't region locked?

Just like the 360 DD I can imagine Sony putting region locking on DD to avoid this.

Apparently they're the same price as the Slim. Well, as far as I know they are. Just depends on if you want less hard drive space and the old fat glossy, or more hard drive space and a smaller (but not so good looking) system.

Personally I think the Slim looks ok. Not as good as the old one, but still not bad.

Though the figures are bit redundant the point is not.

$550 for a handheld system is an awful lot. Though I like the idea of PSP games always being available on the system I dislike the fact that those who upgrade essentially make all their currently owned physical UMD games useless. Sure, Sony have talked about a trade up but the chances of this happening in New Zealand are rather slim (no pun intended).

Would be great if PSP games were downloadable to play ON the PS3. Kinda defeats the purpose, but still.

Which only confirms my point further. I went by the RRP but it actually sells for $599 in most places. So for probably $50 more than a PSP Go, you get a PS3!

I'll just stick with my fatty PSP 1002... I don't think it will be too popular in NZ since it's only digital distribution... With NZ's low data plans with sky high internet costs, The Go! is not looking too good in NZ IMHO...

Yeah quite right. The NZ broadband situation doesn't really allow for big game downloads much, so I don't know how popular the Go will even be with the more casual audience who may not see that the 3000 is probably a better deal

I'll be sticking with my fat-PSP. Anything >$500 for a handheld console is ridiculous. If it doubled as a _practical_ MP3 player, then maybe, but the controls are not convenient for using it as such, and unless it's significantly smaller than the PSP-slim, then it's still too uncomfortable to wander around with it in your pocket.

Do we know if it's going to have a decent screen for a change? All the PSPs to date have had very poor quality LCDs, renders them hopeless for trying to watch movies on IMO.

Well it is considerably smaller, but the MP3 player part of the software will be unchanged. So I guess it's still not really worth having in that respect.

Wow, that's just ridiculous. I'm not going to buy a psp go since I already have a psp and even though the psp is alright (Once you hack it and can play old games on it) I wouldn't want to pay that much for it.

Bouycot. Force them to lower the price.
The early birds get GT PSP 'free', and Sony said a while back that those who want it sooner are gonna have to pay premium..

Xbox elite has now been announced for $499 nzd.. !!? cheaper the the Go

I was optimistic, but thats gone out the window. I will not e gatting this any time soon.

First of all, I would like to say that I enjoyed this blog. Now, to what I say.

The PSPGo is a straight rip-off. I don't know what has gotten in to Sony's mind. But lately, their marketing strategy weakened. I'm not sure if some idiot came to Sony and took over it and made stupid decisions. The PSP's hardware is far more capable than running small softwares. Sony as well as other developers should make bigger, badder games like God of war. More of those AAA+ titles. The reason why Ipod touch and Iphone has those bite sized games is because their hardware can't handle ****. Now don't get me wrong, I think the Iphone and Ipod touch are great. But seriously Sony.

I have the PSP 1000 (FAT), I think its great. I play it everyday. I'm planning to buy the 3rd generation Ipod touch. When the PSPGo was announced I was actually considering myself on getting one, but now that we have the idea of the cost, NO THANKS Sony. Your new PSP can Go! away.

Great blog Oliver. I think the old saying of “more money than sense” could be attached to those who buy a PSP Go at release. Especially if your prediction is correct … and from what I’ve read, you probably won’t be too far off the mark.

I think it’ll be a great “nice to have”, but a very expensive one – especially when you compare it to other “nice to haves” … as you’ve done so well.

I’d rather spend an extra $50 to get a skinny PS3 … just to put it next to my fat one! … PS3 that is! …

Well yeah, it's not the PSP2. It's not the PSP 4000 either though. It's a completely new model.

The PSP 4000 is rumoured to be on its way though.

Too right man. Unfortunately though, we generally double the price of any US products to get the NZ price. It's wrong but it's the way it seems to happen.

Eg. PS3 Slim US$299/NZ$599
PSP Go US$250/NZ$499
