GCA Blog #2: First Day

Published: Fri 19 Sep, 2008 | 23 Comments

Okay, I'm running on sugar, in the form of a chocolate milkshake (go room service!). Coherency is the goal here, but it may be unobtainable...

Things started off a bit slowly - after a night out with various other media people (including a hilariously drunk Korean journo - see below), I woke up feeling pretty tired. I walked along to the convention centre, and sat around for a while as the shindig was set up around us.

Finally it all kicked off, and we were ushered upstairs to the showroom floor for the opening ceremony. And I shall tell the rest of the tale through photos...

Outside the convention hall. Note the warm, warm temperature.

Inside, before it was filled with people.

EA's sizeable booth.

Aw, inne cute?

Okay, so they had Soul Calibur IV set up, so naturally I gravitated towards it to try and see how I got on. As it turned out, the guy with me in the photo above JUST beat me, and he's pretty hardcore. I managed to beat some other guys there who were sitting around all the time. But I may have lost points with my character selection - apparently Kilik isn't a cool choice, because *everyone* goes with him? Bah.

Here's Peter Molyneux of Fable fame talking during his keynote at the end of the day. I also checked out SimAnimals, The Sims 3, Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, etc - expect previews when my brain isn't so fuzzy.

Anyway, Peter was as entertaining as I'd hope he'd be - looking forward to interviewing him tomorrow! He also showed off Fable II, and I have to say it looked pretty damn sweet. The dog, the bread crumbs, the graphics, and the co-op play all looked really, really good.

Then I went to Chinatown!

We sure do.

Pretty lights +2.

I went down some side streets with vendors everywhere, and people tried to sell me mahjong sets and suits, as happens

Smelly people count: 0-5,000.

Weird people count: 1. He's now known as "Korea" - he's a cheerful fulla who's a gaming journalist from over there. I was introduced to him while he was roaring drunk, and refers to me as "New Zealand!", hence his own nickname.

Tomorrow: interviewing folk from Crytek, DICE, EA, and more!

Yeah, Kilik is one of the easier characters to pick up and use, I'd say Mitsurugi is more like the Ryu/ken though.

"Aw, inne cute?"

Is that referring to the Wall-E or the Korean?

alienhominidReplyPosted by alienhominid on 19 September 2008, 10:34AM
wallE is a rip off of johnny 5.

RuptunexReplyPosted by Ruptunex on 19 September 2008, 12:19PM
Kilik is easy to use. I've always used him even from the second game. I'd say Nightmare and Siegfried are the new Ryu/Ken

That guy you played in SC looks like he wants to rip off your face and feed Asian milk to your children.

I've coveted the Wall-E on top of the popcorn maker at Reading for quite some time. I wish I knew some one who worked there. . .

they have a wall E thing at Berkeley at botany still I think. it's head was supposed to follow you as you walk past but it never worked and would sometimes make random beeping sounds.
