Perfect Dark Zero

Published: Wed 16 Jul, 2008 | On:

For a long time, since I had heard that the epitimy of N64 games was getting a prequel (whitch confused the hell out of me since Perfect Dark was a quasi-sequel to Golden-Eye), I had wanted to play this.

It was to be the bench mark of FPS gaming (in my head). All other games including the Halo trilogy were going to be in awe of what Zero could do. Alas, this is not what it turned out to be. How sad I felt.

I loved, love, Perfect Dark. It was the first console game I had ever played that said "Hmph, you console isn't good enough to play me. Expand or die! Mwarhahaha" and since I was simply borrowing a friends copy, I had no N64 Expansion pack. Moments of torment like this define games. Having to earn the games respect before you even get to see the loading screen somehow makes it so much more worth playing. I had expected this again with Zero and was not disappointed. Xbox 360 required updates though, dont seem quite as satisfying...and that felling didnt leave the further on I got.

Expecting a new and improved Perfect Dark, I may have over hyped myself reading reviews af 8/10, 9/10 etc, and that exactly what I got. A New and Improved Perfect Dark. New Levels and Improved graphics, thats it. (This is where the gripes start so turn back now if you wish).

The game play was lack-luster. The controls generic. The wepons and level design simplistiic and A.I. with the intellegence of a wet sponge. The difficulty jumps from 'Do I need a wepon?'-easy to "MotherF***** B**** C*** WTF was that I emptied my clip in him and he kills me with one shot'-hard. While the story is good, it doesnt quite have enough of a pull to keep you in the game, and while I understand this is an early release title for the 360, its not a hard thing to lift the playability up a few levels from a N64. Side by side, the only thing better in Zero is the look.

Zero is a good game, but not quite great. While other peoples reviews are sound, 9.0 on NZ Gamer even, I would have to say its a mediocre game that leaves q fair amount of room for improvment.
