Kaotic Blog #1

I'm scared of a purely digital download future, let me make this clear right  now before you read any further.

I'm sitting here watching the  2nd 1-Dayer( so far so good NZ bowlers keeping Oz under control 26/0 7ov) and theres a comp on NZ gamer to win a game if you Blog, which game I don't recall FFXIII I think??? So hopefully today I will complete my 1st ever blog, the kiwi's will go 2-nil up, and the result will be lots of nice compliments below (thus inflating my ego) and eventually NZ gamer will post out my new game.....

On the subject of comments from you the reader, it is somewhat unnerving knowing my writing here will be scrutinised and commented on, unnerving to be sure, but kinda cool too, so go ahead comment away I am looking forward to your views on my opinions.

Purely Digital future eh? no more floppy discs, no more 'press play on tape', no more  CD/DVD/Blu-Ray's, No more trading in games,  No more price matching, no more waiting in line at midnight launches. No more having uber cool game collections showing off on your games shelf, No I don't like it one little bit!

The Aussies are starting to fire now 16 off last 2 overs, damn, we need a wicket. If things start to go bad I'll get stuck back into Mass Effect and follow the cricket on cricinfo til we pull things back in.

What a charmed life, when the hardest priority I have to decide is follow cricket, or which console to play on!! Sure the lawns need doing, the outside windows need cleaning and I'm sure a range of other small jobs need attenttion but hey it's Saturday and you gotta relax sometime right!!

If we don't have physical media (ie Disc's with games on them) in the future does this mean they'll be cheaper, nah I doubt it, most of the games currently available from Consoles online stores that are also availble on discs in shops are more expensive to download than to buy instore. The fire in my belly is being stoked, I do not want to live in the digital only future :(

I'm going to be a dad in 4 weeks it's exciting scary, nappys, sleepless nights, expensive and HOW AM I GONNA FIND TIME TO PLAY GAMES?????? Breath, deep breath's everything will be fine.... No honestly it's the most exciting and surreal experince of my life.

WICKET, Watsons out caught and we needed it 73/1 14ov.

In a purely digital future, once they've really got the technology sorted and my body has become to decripit to hold a controller, can I download my consiousness to a HDD? I mean we have 3D TV now, surely this is the secrect, a virtual 3D me can live for enternity right :)

WICKET, Ponting gone, idiotic shot straight up and caught, Tasmanians eh !! 79/2 15ov

This started as a simple blog so I could babble incessantly but I realise now it is a call to arms my fellow NZ gamers , JUST SAY NO TO A DIGITAL FUTURE, when you are surveyed in the street, let them know you don't like it, hell, tell 'em "I say NO!"

Trust me I know it's totally wrong, I buy and sell games for a living. The desire of corporate heads to have total control over the distribution on video games is simply

narrow minded and shows a complete misunderstanding of how capitalism should  work,  in 15 years time if the big cheeses at EA etc get their way there will be very little opportunity for2nd hand traders such as myself, effectively  stifling the flow of money through out society, only one person can ever make money of a DL game, that’s Totalirism not capitalism. No I definitely don’t like it. I’ve much more to add and will in the Kaotic blog #2.

Kiwi’s just took another, blinder by Vettori C&B, 116/3 23 ov.

Thanks y’all for ye time, Ciao

Firstly, get a real blog name :D

Secondly, the cricket was weird, but it held this blog together...somehow

Thirdly, I completely disagree. Digital only only gives one person money? Surely you can think harder than that. The developer gets cash, the reseller gets cash, the internet companies get cash (seeing as we need to use them), The console market will likely get cash.

Personally I think the idiots in games retailers stores will not be missed, that isnt to say each and every EB and Gamesman employee isnt a total turd...but most of them are.

We now create and live in a culture of instant gratification, if I cant achieve happiness quickly then I lose patience and I'm not the only one.

You cant change that and regardless if people say: "Well just have some patience" I wont.

I recently installed BC2 and realised how much I loathe installing things from a disk simply because of the time it takes over a direct install.

Of course that doesnt affect console players, but my belief there is that consoles are going to need to be PC's in every sense if they want to continue competing :D

Digital Downloads f**k yea!

@ takuyafire Only one person makes money off the 'sale' of a Downloaded game, I cannot sell my downloaded purchase to you when I'm finished with it can I???? in fact in less than 2 years time I'll have wiped it off my HDD to clear space, and its gone for ever. I sell online via Trademe etc, but you still can't beat the experience of walking into a shop to make a purchase, if you could retail in general would disappear and it won't for a very very long time. And WHAT???, you want instant gratification from an online purchase, well I wanna know who your IP is as an online purchase for me is far far from instant, surely you can do better than that. Also this blog refers primarily to Console gaming though I did not make that clear, and like it or not this where the future of gaming will be, especially as greedy corporations realise than can have total control of the distribution of Console software, without having to worry about dirty pirates, and don't get me started on that filth :0

You're delusional my friend. Consoles have been given a "10 year life span" or there abouts.

In 10 years PC went from GeForce 2Ti to current Nvidia and ATI hardware...next gen consoles will not last 10 years, they wont even breach 5. They will need to be PC's with a different controller very soon else they will not compete.

As far as reselling goes, I buy games as a game collecter not as an entrepreneur to resell games.

Hell I'm currently being shipped the collectors PS3 edition of FFXIII and I dont even have a PS3 so I care little about onselling, Im not here to make money, Im here to play games.

You might dislike PC piracy, I dislike reselling games as a game enthusiast.

But thats just opinions so no hard feelings :D

If no one re sells games how is anyone going to get a game that was created before they were born? I am a second hand trader of rare games and this includes C64 & Atari stuff, tell me how some born in the 90's is not is supposed to get a copy of YARS REVENGE if not from a second hand dealer such as myeslf? I also sell a lot of copies of FFVIII(my personal favourite game of all time) without people like myself lots of others would never get a chance to play such master pieces, and in the future with Downloaded only games, lots of up coming gamers will miss out on the games of yesteryear if the only way they were ever available was via download.
Like it or not a wonderful market is beginning to bloom for collectable games, and sadly it would seem for those who love enjoying and selling the thing they are most passionate about, creedy single minded corps who don't give a stuff about gaming just the bottom line for themselves and share holders, would like to nip aforementioned market before it gets a chance to bloom. Consoles are the future like it or not the 360 is already 5 years old this November so the 5 year breach is nigh and many games are beginning development that will not be realised for another 3-4 years so 10 years is a given. Does anyone realistically think corporate giants Microsoft & Sony would invest billions in consoles if they were not the future? Simply if they say it so, it so, just by pure marketing power alone, the PC is a valuable tool for advancing programming technique and pathing the way forward but is not the future, consumers on mass are simply not willing to update as often as the platform requires. The likely conclusion to the console wars is and eventual XStation 5 giving the 2 mega corps near total control over your gaming time, probably about the same time as Ninty go Wii HD.

Ahh you raise a good point here about the onselling of old games...but you've missed something.

I want to play FFVII because it was a revolutionary game of its time, I play Star Ocean too because of the same reason.

However, can you name a current gen "revolutionary" game?
Sure Crysis had good graphics but that wont hold.
Sure Uncharted had awesome gameplay, but that can be replicated.
Sure Dragon Age had a hugely in depth story, but any decent author could out-write it.
Sure Mass Effect was hellishly fun, but there is a newer version of it, so why bother with the old.

Thats why I think digital downloads will claim the market. I run a decent sized gaming community and I can honestly say that none of them visit or buy from game retail stores. Its far more convenient to have them delivered or to download them.

As far as consoles go, you do realise that consoles are becoming PC's right? Look back to Sega - PSX days. They played games that you put in...nothing more.
Now a console is a non-upgradable (emphasis) semi-functional PC. Next gen consoles will mimic PC's more and more in their functionality as these "billion dollar" marketeers realise that console players want more diversity in their machines.

Thats all I have to add today :D

That was probably the weirdest blog I've ever read yet somehow I enjoyed it. The strange structure worked well for it somehow.

Yeah, I'm with you on not wanting a DD future. My main reason would be the collection aspect though. Hard drives fail (usually quicker) moreso than discs and cartridges too and I would hate the feeling of downloading a game and then having it vanish in an accident.

Onlive? Even worse for me. Then I don't even have the data so there's even less collectability. Yup, that's my only reason for disliking the idea.

@someone in the comments

Why can't you sell an Digital download to a friend when you are done? I think it'd be a clever idea to be able to sell the license to a DD game that you don't want anymore to someone else at a discounted price, you could get half of your MS points or money back, or a quarter or something and then Sony and MS makes more money.

f**k i'm a genious

I loved your stream of consiouness blogging style! Very cool. I also happen to agree with you about DD and yes it's because I'm somewhat of a collector in that I still own every console game I've ever purchased, from FFVII to my gold cart OoT. I don't like the fact that DD will soon be the only way to buy a game. But I'm old school like that. I'm not saying DD doesn't have merits and I buy some games digitally but for the purchase of games I really care about I preorder at a local independant games store and actually pay a little more just so I can go in and pick up the game I've been looking forward to for so many months. This already seems quaint and in a few years time it'll be unheard of I'm sure.

Digital Distribution? I also just hate it sooo much. It takes half of the fun out of games. I seriously just despise the thought of it.

I buy my games online so not too fussed about the store dudes (although get rid of them = more unemployed) I love collecting my games though so all digital would suck, not to metion how long it would take to DL a game.

Good luck with the kid, there is gaming after kids your just more tired then you should be is all :)

I agree the majority of game retail stores people are not the highlight of the shopping experience, but in all honesty are there any retail experience's where the sales people are the highlight? Most people reading visiting this site are informed consumers and we know what we want and how much we should be paying. A retail game purchase is about holding a brand new shiny game in your hand, picking up some munchies and drinks then getting that baby home asap :)

I personally am all for digital downloads. I get the whole horror of not being able to on sell games but honestly half the games i sell i end up wishing i hadn't at a later date and seriously consider re buying them. Also people figured out ways to on sell games from steam so its plausible that they will figure out a way to do the same for console digital downloads.
