Accents

Tags: Accents, Nationalitys, Discremination

It was an average day online. I was wandering through the servers, happily fragging the day away, not a care in a world. I dropped into a lobby and happily said my custamary ''Hello'', I was greeted in turn by a disgusted sounding Amercian saying "Oh my god! Ah you British?"

This sadly has happened to me far to often. It would seem that foerigners cannot differenate between accents, and accordingly abuse people for cultures they don't belong to, and get even angrier when they deny that they are not infact, an English speaking Icelander.

Now I may be exagerating a bit there, I have not yet been mistaken for a citezen of Iceland. But for too long have I been called a 'Bloody Brit' or a 'Fu*#in Aussie'. Now it's not fair that people discreminate by the way people talk, in the same way people discreminate by the colour of peoples skin.

So please people, do not tease people by the way they talk, and stick up for people if you hear them being pestered online. After all, eventually it may be you that needs defending.

~Divine

There was once a guy trying to tell me that I was from Europe, and that Europe was a third world country...1. Im NZer, 2. Europe isn't 3rd world, 3. Europe is not a country.

When people say theyre from America I usually pretend Ive never heard of it. hehe.

Are you sure these idiots aren't just talking crap to wind you up or something. I mean I find it hard to imagine that there are such ignorant people out there...esp gamers. If they think Europe is a country, let alone a third world one then they really are pathetic and stupid!!

When I moved to America from the UK, everyone thought I was Australian. We had the most unbelievably pommy accents ever. Mind you, what do you expect from America? When I said I was moving to New Zealand, most of them didn't even know where it was. In fact, some people I talk to online over there thought it was in Europe by Norway.

Hehe, like in Scrubs. "Do you even know where New Zealand is?" *pauses* "I bet you could skip your way there from Old Zealand!..." Ofcourse, ofcourse.

Haha, crazy isn't it? I actually do have something of an accent (because my dad's side of the family are English/Welsh, or should I just say 'European' for any Americans out there? ;D) but it's very slight. But someone asked me the other day if I had an accent. Admittely I was putting on an accent to say something 'frightfuly British', but one would have imagined that should have made it all the more obvious?! But actually no, it does happen all the time.
Oh yeah, someone I became 'friends' with online (not in that way ;b) said we should talk on some messeging thing some time, but then I pointed out that it was the middle of the night over there (somewhere in America I think) when I was usually able to get online in the evening ... come to think of it, would only have been early morning wouldn't it? ha my bad ;D
