My Plea to Nintendo Fans

Published: Mon 29 Sep, 2008 | 29 Comments

Alright, so we've all heard of the major Nintendo titles, Zelda, Mario and such, and we all know of their popularity because whether we like it or not, these two titles alone has given Nintendo enough money to build an army of robots and take over the world. And I'm sure many of you reading this are big fans yourself. But I don't see how these classic titles can be regarded as good, let alone be seen as the Kings of Games that they are seen as today.

The thing that sparked this blog for me was Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Like many people I've heard the reputation of this games as being an extremely fun fighter game with a reasonably compelling story mode, but had never myself played any games in the "Super Smash Bros." franchise. So, because of this I'm not ashamed to say that I was somewhat excited about the chance to play it when I heard that one of my friends had finally got a copy. Alas, disappointment was soon to follow when I played it and discovered that it was nothing more than a below average fighting game with 2D sidescrolling maps, a camera so far away you can't see where your character is, and a moveset the consists of "Punch" and "Special" for every character. So I thought to myself well, surely this game wouldn't be so popular for no reason, I'll try the story mode. I was wrong, the story mode is no different, except it has a half-baked story that consists of cashing on on the various characters and their respective franchises.

After this experience you'd think that I'd be shocked, how can such a popular game be so bad, am I missing something? Or is it really as mediocre as it appears to be? No, it's not a shock. You know why? NINTENDO DOES THIS ALL THE FREAKING TIME! They periodically release the same game every few years because they figure "they liked it back then so if we throw in a gimmick and better graphics they will give as their money right?" And if you think it's any different you're deluding yourself, Nintendo thinks this way, they care about money, not you. They're treating you like you're stupid, thinking that if they put in Mario or Zelda they will make you want to but a game, and you know what? You're buying right into this scam. YOU are the ones giving them all this money so they can make the same game where you saev the prnicess but tis teim you can b wolf.

So I say to you Nintendo fans, WAKE UP! Don't buy into their scam, go forth into the gaming world and play more interesting games. There are so many games out there that are original AND they have interesting and lovable characters plus a compelling and engaging story. If you can get away from these dated franchises, you'll never look back.

Zelda games have been a bit 'meh' lately and I don't enjoy Smash Bros - Mario Galaxy on the other hand is one of the best games I have played in years.

Nintendo have been rehashing games and characters since the 80s because its a license to print money. Why wouldnt they continue doing so?

Id hate to have a Wii. You basically get a couple great games a year...and thats it. But people lap it up so...*shrug*

I like smash brothers, it is fast paced and you need to use your character well to beat experienced players, Mario Galaxy is beyond great and I love the Zelda franchise, if I remember rightly they were the first to introduce z targeting in ocarina of time.

I've been playing a lot of 80s Nintendo games lately. Imo, they're horrible. They've got potential in their gameplay formula, but some of them have a few too many flaws. Donkey Kong Jr was alright though.

My favourite retro game would have to be 2d Ice Hockey for the moment.

GokuReplyPosted by Goku on 30 September 2008, 05:54PM
Well it could well be that there was something about the game that went completely over my head, cause I couldn't figure out how it was so popular. That or it's popular with young kids and nostalgia-blinded fools.

stupidlikeafoxReplyPosted by stupidlikeafox on 30 September 2008, 06:41PM
smash bros is not a fighting game. fighting games require skill. wow, this blog pretty much sums up how ive felt about nintendo for quite some time. except for mario galaxy, nintendo have been doing the same old for years. *SNORE*

I know it sucks, but hey it works doesnt it? nintendo are still making a whole heap of money from this so they're not going to change any time now.

if it ain't broke don;t fix it.

Doe's anyone here remember what the internet was made for? Well, other than porn? It was so that everyone could get out there and voice thier worthless generic opinion, this is his, this is mine, that's all of yours, but no matter what, none of them matter, because it's POINTLESS! And so is this comment!.................I have to find a tree somewhere so I can sit down and think for 15 year....That's what Buddah did.

And I know this guy who's pretty cynical about everything, and he loves Brothers Brawl, so it must have some level of hidden awsemeness :p

SSBB is no fun at all if you don't like the characters. Most of the charm is in characters from very different games fighting each other. It's awesome seeing how different most of the characters are, and how they have implemented different attacks and trademark moves from the games that the characters are from. The more shitty nintendo games you are familiar with, the cooler it is. The same goes for the way they have implemented the different stages. The reason it's all wrapped up in a 2d fighting game is because most of the characters are from 2d platform games.

If you don't really know or like any of the characters, imagine a similar game with characters that you do like. Or if you don't like the 2D fighting part of it, imagine a different type of game. EG: A first person shooting game like Counterstrike with reasonably simple mechanics and graphics, but where you could be the Master Chief (with assault rifle, dual-weilding, sticky grenades and recharging sheilds), Gordon Freeman (complete with crowbar and gravity gun, and random appearances by the G-man), James Bond, Marcus Fenix, Jim Raynor and Infested Kerrigan, Leonard and Bubba, Lego indiana Jones, a Big Daddy from bioshock (with a little sister you have to protect), and 30 or so other characters from different games that are all hilariously or authentically reproduced so that it feels a lot like you are actually controlling that particular character. How f**king cool would that be?

In my opinion, that's why Nintendo fans like SSBB.

Koopa18ReplyPosted by Koopa18 on 1 October 2008, 05:20PM
Non "2D" fighting games are balls, for the most part.

And whoever told you it had a compelling storyline was a fool. Its an excuse to beat up characters you hate with characters you love, and nothing more.

Half the time they are forgetting their core titles, the other half they are rehashing the same core titles.

Theres no pleasing you people.

Koopa18ReplyPosted by Koopa18 on 1 October 2008, 06:22PM
Oh wait, im not finished. If you pushed just a and just b, you are retarded.

Just Attack and Special. Bah.

And how long did you play this story mode for? did you play STORY mode, or CLASSIC mode? did you play it co-op?

I got away from these dated franchises. I missed out on the cube wagon and got a ps2 which i owned for all of last gen. I sold it and got a cube last year. Your look back comment is opinion and nothing else. Your opinion isnt better than mine. They are equal.

Also, they just brung back Mega Man. And everyone creams whenever Sonic is in a new game. You meant to say "NINTENDO frnachise i hate for no reason".

AND DAMN RIGHT YOU CAN BE WOLF, HES THE BEST CHARACTER IN THE GAME.

Yeah, I'd love to see Nintendo put their budget into some new games, instead of new versions of old games
