The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Published Saturday 26 Jul 2008 11:10am | Nintendo WiiThis is the first game review Ive ever written, but I guess thats quite seeing how this was the first game I bought for my Wii. The legend of Zelda: Twighlight princess is the first, and odds are the only real Zelda game that has/will ever grace the Wii. And what an amazing ride it was.
Story:
You play as link (Or what ever else you choose to call the little mute) a humble farm boy from Ordon village. But thats boring right? Yeah... yeah it really is, but I'll get on that later. You continue on with your normal life hearding sheep-goat things, finding missing baby carriers and, (Ugh,)
"Hanging out" with the local ugly little kids who think that you, in terms of awesomeness are way up there with CHUCK NORRIS. But all that changes, and you are plunged into a spiritual war between the kingdom of Hyrule and the dark and mysterious dimension known as the Twilight Realm.
And so, the real story begins. Along your quest you will meet an array of stunning characters, and come across plot twists both unexpected and those so obvious that you should have seen them before you started playing the game seeing how its in the title. There can be a dull moment from now and then but luckily, they take up such a small part of the story's plot that you won't remember them. The plot is very clear and easy to follow, it gives you the freedom to skip scenes without regretting it, which is great if your in a hurry. The story is full with emotion, and even though there is very little (if any) voice acting, you will connect with the characters, you will care what happens to them (Except the previously mentioned ugly villager children) and most of all you will feel a sense of awe as you see the story go from climax to climax until you reach an ending that is so stunningly well executed, it would put your favourite big block-buster movie to shame.
Gameplay and Design:
Now the part that most people will be wondering about. The gameplay in LoZ:TP is well executed and polished to a shine. The wii motion sensitive controls are put to good use without becoming a hastle or a gimmick. Aiming with the wii-mote to headshot a fire -bat with the bow and arrow is way more fun than using a control stick or D-pad, and also gives alot more precision. Using the sword is fun even though the sword motions needed are barely more than a wiggle, so no, NO YOUR ARMS WON'T GET TIRED! Basic movement and response using the nunchuk and wiimote combo always feel tight and responsive, action commands are simple and effective and the menu and inventory screnes are very understandable and managable, and if your worried that the gameplay will get repetitive and dull, then you obviously have never played a Zelda game before. You have two different forms to master (Three if you count horse-back), new content is constantly unlocking wether it is new abilities or items, and with an amazing boss battle awaiting you at the end of each puzzle filled dungeon you will feel compelled to keep playing, so help you GOD! ...... Onto the design! The design in this game is great, it runs like grease lightening the whole way through, the game world is a huge play-ground that is easily managed thanks to the robust warping and travel systems. Unfortunatly the difficuilty for the boss battles and enemys is far to easy. They are abosolute pushovers for the majority of the game. But the puzzles are challenging enough, the difficuilty curve is great and you will never be left stuck not knowing what to do next. Which is great for me! And did I mentio how big it is? If you play this game everyday for 6 hours, then it will take you 2 weeks to beat just the main story quest. You won't go rushing back to the store to trade it in any time soon.
Presentation:
What can I say? It is a Wii game. Although the art in this game is incredible, it will be slurred every now and then my muddy textures. But it will rarely get in the way to ruin your experience that much. The music is great, the text is sharply written, the cinematics are beautiful and the production values have never been higher. It is one well polished game.
In conclusion this is a great game and If you actually read all of this then you should know why. Like my Gamereviewing idol Ben "Yhatzee" Croshaw of zero punctuation I dont really believe in summing up a game in a number out of 10 but if I had to it would be a 9. A very strong 9.
