Global Recession vs Gaming Industry

Published Sunday 23 Nov 2008 12:51am | 14
Tags: Global Recession, Gaming Industry

When you watch the 6 o'clock news or read the newspaper, you notice a lot of doom and gloom about the global economy and the recession but, wonderfully enough, it won't be affecting the gaming industry as much as in other industries.

WHY NOT?

Let's have a look at why the recession is happening: Rising house prises, people borrowing money when they can't repay it back and then the news telling everyone that we're going into a recession. All of these affect first homebuyers, middle-to-low income families, people who need to spend money on stuff they need.

First, notice how this doesn't affect the apparent main target market of video gamers: teenaged boys who have part time jobs but don't need to pay mortgages or rent, food, electricity, rates, phone and Internet. They have money to spend and spend it they will, on whatever they please.

Second, entertainment is still as popular as ever, being an easier way to escape the dreary reality but everything else entertaining has become more expensive.

  • Movies ($20ish with popcorn and a drink?)
  • Holidays overseas ($1000+)
  • Nice dinners out (Depends if you go to McD's or some French restaurant).

Why pay so much for a couple of hours of entertainment or an arm and a leg to go to another country to just pay another leg to do stuff? Instead, spend two thumbs and buy a new game for $50 that will give you at least 20 hours of game play in story mode and unlimited laughs in multiplayer?

Sure, everywhere is going to get hit hard by the recession.

Best Buy, No. 1 electronics chain in the US predicted a much lower profit for the year and Circuit City filed for bankruptcy.

From the Dominion Post, 17 Nov 2008.

Click to embiggen and yes, I did cut out the models.

But we know the game and we're gonna play it, with predictions of growth for the video game industry in 2008 and 2009.

My advice for this ‘difficult' time? Spend as much money as you're earning (paradox of thrift and all that)

That's probably because all the games that look good are coming out next year. 2009 is gonna rock!

This blog is so true. I only work part time, my partner works about 30 hours a week, and among bills and rent and everything, we've still bought about sixty games this year, some being special editions where possible.
Gaming makes more nowadays than movies, so its gonna be pretty hard to bring the industry down. Yay for games!
Finally us gamers will come out on top, and we can laugh at everyone else.

Why? Because gamers prioritize gaming above most things, probably only superseded by food and petrol.

I for one have given up many things but I haven't changed my video game consumption at all.

You can't really afford to pay an arm and a leg to go to other countries if you're going to pay them for the next gen consoles. I agree though; if you're going to lose limbs and whatnot, it might as well last longer than a few hours, or at best a week.

I prioritise correctly. Games go below food and above everything else.

this economic crisis sux tho, and u missed out the sad little fact that 'what if mummy and daddy can no longer afford your precious internet or the excessive power bills from you late night gaming". the fact is, that this crisis IS going to hit everyone sooner or later. Yes that does include the part time teenagers who have all this money with no real bills because ur employer may not be able to afford to keep you around, and do u really think mummy and daddy will throw you a few hundred bucks for a couple of games?? ah what a joke.
so yea, maybe it has'nt hit the gaming industry yet.. but sadly it will soon.
