NCEA = Not Acheive?

Published Monday 17 Nov 2008 10:44pm | 50
Tags: Education, NCEA, Dumbening

So I saw in the paper the other day they are planning to, or at least thinking of, taking out Shakespeare papers from the school curriculum. This along with the proposition of decreasing the number of points needed to pass NCEA level 1 from 80 to 60, just makes me lose hope in the NZ education system.

It's just "too hard" apparently.

As a nation, we're hailed as intelligent, innovative and hardworking.

I'm not sure if that's how it really is.

I guess I'm lucky that in my group of friends most have passed NCEA level 3 and are either studying at Uni or and are working. But I can imagine there are a large sum of people without NCEA level 2 qualifications and plans for the future, except for maybe working at McDs or New Worlds or being a drain on our society.

The future for our futures?

But whom do we blame? When the going gets tough, do the tough loosen their belts and let everything slide?

Now, interestingly, compared with the Finnish who have a consistently high student performance and are ranked first in the OECD, we're placed seventh best, behind Japan and in front of Australia (YUS!)

So then, do we need push our students harder? Make the consequences of failing direr? Or keep going as we are, making it easier to pass?

Do we want to let our future go through a process of dumbening?

i think thats a big problem too. Ncea lv1 allows you to pass on pretty much internals alone (Depending on your classes of course) but then lv2 requires more external credits but i dnt think many kids realise this and flunk out because of there exams.. its a shame because making ncea easier would not help, it needs to remain hard so that it challenges people and keeps them going... because lv3 is a breeze! :P

Wow how many ppl here are doing NCEA externals this year here? Anyway, I'm doing NCEA lvl 1 this year and I don't see the reason that I even need to go to externals as I already have 80 lvl 1 creds. Also, my careers teacher is always telling us that we got 20 free lvl 2 credits just for passing lvl 1. Wtf?

NCEA lvl 1 was so easy!
I got 161 credits, so I had enough credits for two people to pass... I didn't fail any papers, and no I'm not trying to brag, because i believe that anyone can easily pass NCEA lvl 1 as it is. It should be made harder NOT easier!

I'm a lazy student, but when the times get tough i put my nose to the grindstone and work at it. It's those people who have no motivation etc. (i know loads of people). This is my first year of NCEA, but i'm in NCEA lv.2 and i'm sitting at 75 credits without NCEA lv.1 or External credits (if i passed more drama internals i'd be over 80). Oh and the Level2 English questions were a b*tch for me! But then I dislike english...

NCEA qualifications are worth sh*t all overseas. If you were trying to get into a university in Europe, the UK or in the US then you are sh*t out of luck. If moving overseas is in your plans for the future for your education, I would heartily recommend the International Baccalaureate program as Jaz has already said. It is actually internationally recognized, hence the name.

I think it's stupid them reducing the amount of credits you need to pass. Students should rise to meet the curriculum. The curriculum shouldn't stoop down to the students.

I was exactly the same. I spent most of my year 13 wagging in the common room, only took four subjects, and still got Level 3 and UE.

Maybe partly coz I'm awesome though :P

This should never happen. 80 credits is soo easy in lvl 1. Just turn up and you'll pass. We need to change peoples attitudes, not the system

They have so many alternate courses for the retards of NCEA; they take you to a farm to nail a piece of wood for wire for 4 level 1 US credits. Far too easy as it is.
