NCEA = Not Acheive?

So I saw in the paper the other day they are planning to, or at least thinking of, taking out Shakespeare papers from the school curriculum. This along with the proposition of decreasing the number of points needed to pass NCEA level 1 from 80 to 60, just makes me lose hope in the NZ education system.
It's just "too hard" apparently.
As a nation, we're hailed as intelligent, innovative and hardworking.
I'm not sure if that's how it really is.
I guess I'm lucky that in my group of friends most have passed NCEA level 3 and are either studying at Uni or and are working. But I can imagine there are a large sum of people without NCEA level 2 qualifications and plans for the future, except for maybe working at McDs or New Worlds or being a drain on our society.

The future for our futures?
But whom do we blame? When the going gets tough, do the tough loosen their belts and let everything slide?
Now, interestingly, compared with the Finnish who have a consistently high student performance and are ranked first in the OECD, we're placed seventh best, behind Japan and in front of Australia (YUS!)
So then, do we need push our students harder? Make the consequences of failing direr? Or keep going as we are, making it easier to pass?
Do we want to let our future go through a process of dumbening?

Posted by Srassy on 19 November 2008, 09:12AM Yeah, the students need to pushed a bit more. I was a lazy ass at school but even then I still passed fine.

What take out Shakespeare? I hated it but it's an essential part of the English language!

I got 161 credits, so I had enough credits for two people to pass... I didn't fail any papers, and no I'm not trying to brag, because i believe that anyone can easily pass NCEA lvl 1 as it is. It should be made harder NOT easier!
Think they do, so big cooperate beings are able to lie even easierly...
The level 2 english for short text was so frickin hard cos my two texts had nothing in common.

Maybe partly coz I'm awesome though :P
I think it's stupid them reducing the amount of credits you need to pass. Students should rise to meet the curriculum. The curriculum shouldn't stoop down to the students.
This should never happen. 80 credits is soo easy in lvl 1. Just turn up and you'll pass. We need to change peoples attitudes, not the system
hey hey all u third formers NCEA lvl 1's a piece of crap easy as to pass no doubt but as u get to lvl 3 its fukn hard cause teachers dnt knw half the sh*t, and im not an idiot or anythn do eco, geo, eng, calc scholarships so ther!!! however i did drop eng, calc schols screw that.... u will feel the pain trust me !
