Sports games.....

Tags: Sports games, why

Ladies, Gents.......others.

The other day i was around at my girlfriends place whilst her brother and his friend were playing a Cricket game in high definition of some ridiculously massive screen and while i could appreciate all of the pretty pixels moving in absolute perfect sync with each other, in all honesty after watching about 2 minutes of this game i wanted to kill myself. The fact that someone would make a game about a game (dig at card game games *cough* yugioh *cough*), the fact that the only soundtrack was the crowd sounds recorded at the last armageddon during the kamehameha competition and the annoying commentator that smokes thirty packs a day and narrates his own life and to top it all off they made a game about cricket which is in itself the most boring game known to man, it really just makes me think that someone had too much spare time, a sh*tload of programmers just sitting around playing too much Gears 2 and way too much free porn to bribe them with.

However this got me thinking"Why do we play video games?" the answer to which i found by playing sh*tloads of Final Fantasy (thankyou square-enix, we would be lost without you). In my opinion we play video games to do things that we normally wouldn't be able to do in real life like....hmmmm.... say murder thousands of zombies in a mall complex using an array of awesome and progressively more hilarious weaponry (Dead Rising FTW). Last time i checked that hasnt happened to me and will more than likely never happen, which means my zombie plan is for nothing...........bugger. Coming back to the point, video games exist so that we can leave our own boring lives and become a part of something amazingly awesome that will leave you crying in your seat begging for more blood, guts, gore and real-time shadow rendering *drool* not too mention massive swords and bad ass theme songs. To make a game about cricket, to make a game based on any sport that can be played in real life is blashphemy especially if it is done as poorly as most sports games are. To all those people who play sports games, go out and play it with your friends (especially the friends who are playing WoW, get them out and save their souls before it is too late), if you dont have any friends then rally your family members, if your family members hate you then it may be time to re-think your life. Anyways thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed it.

I used to play football when I was groing up, was in the rep teamsin all but as i got older and had to work for a living, I kinda lost the time and compassion to play club footy...
soooo i play FIFA 09 and lets face I'll never be as good as any of those players.
And well i play shooters cuz i like to blow sh*t up and if i did that in the real world i'd get arrested

escapism.
pure and simple.
if some people dream of shane warne thatīs their thing, you gotta respect it.
in a capitalist economy people will produce what YOU (we) want to buy. Again, only the ratings board stand between you and those bikini clad blade wielding zealots.

I think sports games have there place in gaming along with any other genre, I mean anything where you can be competitive and "Win" in real life naturally lends itself out a virtual couterpart. Personally I think sqeenix is the greatest and the Final Fantasy series are among my games, but I can see how people would think RPG's are a waste of time the same way you think sports games are. It's all personal preference.

Oh yeah, I play games cause they're fun, no deeper seeded reasons than that really, games are just good fun.

Well, people can play what they want to. Personally I don't like sport games as they're now overly complicated (imo), but my brother plays a couple every now and then.

To each their own.

I too find sports games a waste of time. I mean i would much prefer to watch live cricket than to actually play a lame game about it. I understand that theres people out there that like em and all but what annoys me is when you go to EB games just to check out whats new and all you see are FIFA this and FIFA that and cricket, basketball etc..

Sure, anyone can go out and have a game of cricket or football anytime they like, but not many can easily recreate a professional game down at their local park. That's what it's about, playing as your favourite team and beating your greatest rivals, something you can't do in real life. Plus slide tackling absolutely everyone is hilarious fun.

Also, last I checked nobody has released a cricket game for a year or more, at least for the major HD consoles (360 and PS3) so what you likely saw was an older game, and probably not by one of the better quality sports game publishers (when did EA last make a cricket game?). My point is that sports games have come a long way in the last year or two, so that recreation of stadium atmosphere is a lot better now. The commentators are decent and there's a lot more ambient noise too. Trust me, they've improved.

I must say though, board games should never be mimicked in video game form. The computer ends up doing all the thinking for you, like the mathematics involved in Monopoly for example, and it takes out all the brain work required. Mind numbing sh*t in my opinion.

Sorry for the huge reply. It was a good thought-provoking blog even if I don't entirely agree! :)

EDIT: (whoa, how'd he do that?) And to the commenter above, the FIFAs and NBAs are so common in EB Games because they're the ones that sell! :)

You can shoot real people in real life.

Why make a game about that?

There are people who hate sports games because they don't play sports in the real world. Then there are people who play fantasy games and don't play sport because they are just plain lazy or don't know how. Luckily for me, I play basketball, gridiron and box(fitness) which takes up most of my time. I also work full time and study 1 night a week, and when I have enough time, usually on the weekends, I play sports titles. Why??? Because thats what I do with my life in the real world...

So to Astarael, why do you like to play fantasy games??? Is it because you yourself live in a fantasy world and are trying to live out your fantasy dreams??? Or is it a general interest in all things fantasy?

Sports and sports related games are "boring" to those who have no interest or understanding about it. The same goes for fantasy games that only extend as far as your imagination, to when you turn off your console/pc. Now i'm not saying that I have little to no imagination, but draming only happens when I close my eyes and fall asleep.

You can express your opinions however you like, but when you're going to rubbish a gaming genre you don't enjoy, maybe you should ask people why they like sports-related titles and get a better understanding of why they do.

Goodbye...

Is this our final goodbye!!!!???

Sports games are good and all, But the yearly updates serve no purpose other than to fatten the wallets of EA and other sports devs

Perhaps they could just update the rosters via a patch or something, and add the minimal new features or something via patches? I dunno... I'm a sucker for sports games, always buying the latest version. Currently, Fifa 09 and Online Poker (for real money) are my gaming vices.

Fifa 09, because I love football (I also love Rugby and pretty much any other sport, and played 1st XV at high school, so don't call me a poof please lol) and online Poker because sometimes, I can't be bothered going to the Casino or cash games at someones house lol ;)

Nail on the head mate.

Its the multiplayer in sport games that has me coming back year after year. I spose having an interest in sport from the start also plays a part in weather your going to enjoy the experience or not.

Single player in sports games: To full fill your personal fantasies.

Multiplayer in sport games: For bragging rights and general banter.

I play it because it help me to become 'closer to the sport'. Madden is why NFL is my favourite sport. I never knew the rules ro how to play when i first hired madden 2001 or whatever it was. I always did fake punt passes, but it got me into the sport.
I've also learnt a HELL of a lot by playing Football Manager 07,08,09. I now know players from all over the world.

Its this that makes me play. Plus they are fun. Par 3 comp on Tiger Woods anyone?

Yearly updates are fine. Especially in Madden where the rosters change so much.

As for sports games. Wii sports was the #1 seller last year in america which was a whopping 5 million copies higher than second place. Madden 09 on the 360 was the 12th highest selling game last year in america. Only 100,000 copies behing COD:4 on the 360... so yeah, SPorts games have a huge part to play in gaming.

(Its what has saved the Wii)
